The only way is to subscribe to TiVo service, otherwise it will not work properly. No guide, transfers, everything.
Non-subscribed recording
I have one Lifetime and one non-paid extra Premiere used as an HD Cable (Suddenlink) tuner for the bedroom (with a cablecard installed).
I can "record" with the non-subscribed unit in real time - but it seems to only go in 30 minute chunks if I press record while viewing a show... Anyone know of a way to add more than this - or perhaps set manual recording times and channels?
