I just got a used SD H400 and it is pretty noisy. All functions work great, but when we turn off the unit, the fan keeps running and I hear a some kind of processing sound in the background too. Is this normal or is there some king of setting that will turn off the fan when the unit is off? Any help would be appreciated.

On all Tivo's, the hard drives and the fans run 24/7. No turn offs.
Everything sounds pretty normal, although it's possible for drives to become noisy with age. Noise may or may not be a sign of impending drive difficulties, including failure.
If the drive is an original Tivo drive and functioning properly, it's probably about as quiet as it can be.
Make sure to clean the fan periodically and keep all the vents clear for good air circulation.
Go into settings>account and system information to check temp. It will tell you if temp is normal.
I guess you must use in the bedroom. My 2 units(SD-H400 & 540040) are in the den and don't bother me, but they are not totally silent and both are modded with large standard drives. I imagine if they were in the bedroom or any quiet room, they would be more noticeable.

Thats for sure, my SD-400 has been in my bedroom for four years now and I've got use to the noise, but recently upgraded to a series 3 and planning on putting the SD-400 in the exercise room (soon as R2RV is enabled) and now, without the noise I can tell a difference when I go to bed. No TIVO noises to put me to sleepdwit said:

That "processing sound" could be a light rattleing from the fan. If it's the hard drive, then you're kind of stuck unless you're up for a lot of work. The easiest thing to do would be to to replace the fan, it is a 60x60x25mm sized fan found in any computer hardware store. Try getting one that is billed as a quiet fan.
