No Picture or Sound - All lights are ON, on the front panel

I am new to this community. I have owned my TiVO for about 4 years. Today, I was unable to get a picture/audio from my tivo. I have tried different cables, and different input connections.

My tivo is a series 2.

I have tried unplugging it with no luck. Any ideas?

It sounds like either bad input connections or a dead box. Are you using a cable box? Did you reboot it? Can you get a picture if you hook the cable directly to the tv? How do you have the input connected?
All lights on frequently indicates a bad power supply.
I am using a cable box, and have tried hooking directly to the tv with no success. An additional note, my Tivo wireless adapater is also not lit up (no light) and it is plugged in. Input is coaxial from cable company.

All systems worked until yesterday, and no wiring/hook up connections were changed.

Can/where can a new power source be purchased?
http://www.weaknees.com/tivo-power-supply.php

or you may be able to get a whole tivo on ebay for less than what weaknees charges and just swap out the power supply.
If the fan runs when the unit is turned on, doesn't that tell me the power supply is working?

How can I test the hard drive to see if it is working. I am a NOVICE!!!

Thanks

No. "bad" does not have to mean "dead"

Download the drive manufacturer's diagnostic tools from their website and test the drive.

Are you saying that when you hook the cable box directly to the tv that you are not getting a picture/sound also? If that is the case, why are you trying to diagnose the tivo. Sounds like a signal source or cable box issue.
I have a signal from my cable box.

When I plug my Tivo Series 2 into my tv (directly) I get on a blank screen. No tivo screens, nothing.

How do you "reboot" if you can't get a menu or anything up?
Some stupid questions. :)

Is the TiVo in Standby? Did you push the TiVo button on the remote?

As stated before, if all the lights are on the TiVo and there are no lights on the TiVo wireless adapter, you may have a defective power supply. If the power supply is good, but the drive is bad, you would at least get the "Welcome, powering up..." screen, which would never go away.

But in your case, it sounds like you need to replace the power supply.

To reboot the TiVo, unplug the power cable, wait 30 to 60 seconds, then plug it back into power. If you still get all the lights on, replace the power supply.

Hope that helps,

I had exactly the same issue. On the front of your TiVo HD you will see a FORMAT button. Whatever the factory setting is, my 4-year old Panasonic did not like it. Pressing FORMAT several times until the right format works.

TiVo support told me it was a bad hard drive. So I took the unit back and exchanged it for another unit. I had the exact same problem. The FORMAT buttin is not addressed in the manual.

Good luck...
Robomeister, thanks for your advice. I do appreciate it!!!

Do you know of a source or a power supply unit, that would take the unit back on return if it does not fix my issue?

Burger23, thanks for your advice too. However, I do not have a Tivo HD, just simply a Series 2, with a lifetime subscription that I don't want to give up.
Check out post #5 by Mick66. Weaknees is a good source for power supplies for TiVos. You'd have to look at their return policy if it doesn't work.

Good luck.
