A truly great, great series, one of the best I've ever seen in TV's "new Golden Age". The plot is complicated, but basically it's about fighters in the Syrian civil war, on both sides, ISIS and the YPG, which is a militia mostly made up of women. The story switches back and forth in time, little-by-little revealing fascinating back-stories showing how the various characters ended up where they are. In the final few episodes these disparate plot threads are woven together brilliantly. The season finale is just amazing in so many ways.
The cast is full of young, charismatic actors who completely bury themselves in their roles, each of them utterly authentic.
This is complex, uncompromising, adult drama, exploring themes of family, friendship, love, betrayal, courage, sacrifice, and fanaticism. I cannot recommend it strongly enough.
