NFL dilemna
So I had suspended my DirecTV service earlier this year, but renewed it for the baseball playoffs (with enough time to watch the Pats MNF game). Now, while I'm a huge Pats fan, I decided not to renew Sunday Ticket since it looked like it was going to cost $350. And most of the Patriot games are on free TV these days. And I assumed that this week's showdown between the Pats & Cowboys would be on TV. But it isn't, because in LA they are showing the Chargers-Raiders.
I called DirecTV to ask how much it would be for a day pass. They told me it would be $45 (ouch), but the worst thing is that wouldn't even include HD! Double-ouch. I asked what it would cost to get Sunday Ticket for the rest of the season, and the CSR said it would be $269+$99 for SuperFan, and the guy swore they didn't have any promotions. Of course, I know he was lying b/c the automated message was advertising FREE Superfan with Sunday Ticket purchase.
Now, I'm not looking for any sympathy, but I would like to know what my best strategy is for getting the Pats game at the best price. I'd probably suck it up and pay the $45 if the game was in HD, but it isn't. And, while I'm planning to cancel DirecTV service again soon (well, I'm going to suspend it), if I could get Sunday Ticket for a better price (in the $150 range), I'd keep DirecTV through the end of the season and order Ticket.
Do you think I have any chance of success, or should I just give up, suspend DirecTV and head to the sports bar Sunday afternoon? Thanks all.

NO way I'd spend $45 to watch just one game unless you had a bunch of buddies coming over to chip in $5 each or something. For just one game I'd go to the bar.
Fly to DC, go to FedEx Field, and rent the In-Stadium DirecTV Kangaroo TV device for $24.95 for the day.

Call retention and ask if you can have the new customer deal. A normal CSR is not able to offer this, but retention can. I know this for a fact because I did it. I got four months of the Premier package plus Sunday Ticket and Superfan all for $69.99/month for 4 months. As my existing package was costing $61/mo, this worked out at a total cost to me of just an extra $36!

Well, those sound like good ideas. Thing is, I'm planning to cancel DirecTV after the football season. Do those deals require me to extend a commitment with DirecTV?
Well, no one at DirecTV knows about the deal, they say I have to call the special number. Which is just busy, busy, busy. In the meantime, I did manage to negotiate a $20/month discount on my bill.

I'm such a sucker! Being a Bears fan living in Indianapolis, I always get to see the Bears play except for when they play at the same time as the Colts. I checked the schedule of both teams before the season started and found there are only two conflicting games and both are towards the end of the season. Not wanting to miss a single Bears game, I bit the bullet and ordered the Sunday Ticket with Superfan and paid full price ($368) for both. I guess this is a lesson learned, I had no idea I could pay $45 for a single day pass.
I'm no genius, but I know $90 is a LOT less than $368. errrrrr It's pays to do your homework!!!
