So I am new to Tivo, and still trying to figure out how it all works.

Can anyone help me out with something.... I have set up season pass to record a series, and I tried to pick a channel that the show plays on later (time shifted) since I have a set top box and can only watch or record a single channel. That way the show records when I am not watching TV, and I can watch another show that is on during the eariler broadcast.

But say I happen to be watching something else when the season pass show comes time to record, if I cancel that recording, will Tivo be smart enough to know to record it the next time that same episode comes on, or do I have to set it manually?

I guess the same question goes for when I set up to record shows based on a key word. if I cancel a request from tivo to record an episode coming up right away, will it record that episode the next time it airs automatically, or do I have to tell it to do so manually.

It's smart enough to pick the next episode.

You might want, however, to try watching less (or no) Live TV. It's up to you, but recording everything you regularly watch and weaning yourself from Live TV makes scheduling a lot simpler.

Here's the way I would set up the tivo in your situation: You want to watch shows A and B which conflict at one time, but B is repeated later on a different station. Set up season passes for A and both of B, and set A at the highest priority. Both shows will record, and you can watch them both whenever you want.

Assuming that that next episode is on the same channel you have the season pass set for.
(And assuming that if the season pass is set for First Run Only, that the next episode isn't more that 28 days later than the first time that episode aired)

not bad, but Tivo will pick stuff that you want to watch and at some point you have to watch it... may as well be when you have the time to sit down.

Tivo isn't meant to surf.... you'll find that if you just watch what it records things will always be on when you want them to. If not, add them and wait.

You could also create an auto-record wish list for the show, and give it a low SP priority. This will catch the show on any available channel if there isn't something hgher priority in your ToDo list.

From experience, I'd advise caution about setting up a wish list for something general like "CSI" since it's on all the time on one channel or another.

As another newbie, can I jump in with a tivo question?
I am trying to wean myself off of live tv - I am getting better at it. But I have not gotten my hubby used to the theory. Anyway, how can I get the 'to do' list to change. I looked at it tonight and it was almost all news shows. I NEVER watch these. I dont know why tivo picked them to put in the list....i mean it was like 4-7 shows a day for the next week. I went thru and used the red thumbs down. Is that right? How much do I need to worry about what is on that listing?

I would suggest turning OFF the "TIVO suggestions" which is in the settings section. I turn it off whenever I get a new TIVO (I have 3 now). That should eliminate shows in the "to do" list that you don't want.

Suggestions aren't shown in the To Do List. They are shown in the TiVo Suggestions list. If there are unwanted shows in the To Do List it's probably because they match a Wish List. If there are unwanted shows in the TiVo Suggestions list, giving thumbs down to the ones you don't want and thumbs up to the ones you do want is the proper method of training.

I used to be against having Suggestions when I first got my Tivo.

I now use suggestions to help suggest and also see how much free space is left by how many suggestions are recorded.

Suggestions have helped me "use" the rest of the cable tiers that I normally would not have bothered to change my channel to.

I liked suggestions LAST week, but this week it was all news shows. And I don't watch the news. Now maybe it is just Tivo SUGGESTING that I get off the Robot Chicken and Buffy and watch some world news. But every day, 5 different shows - all news orientated? That threw me.
I wonder what will happen now that I have set tivo to record the Lincoln special.
