Newbie question about series 1 instantcake or image.

I bought a series 1 on ebay and it was updated by tivo with the newer 3.x os by the old owner via tivo repair. The original plan was to just not use the subscription service and use it like a manual vcr. Well, I let it call in to update the channels and now it wont work. Worked great for 2 months. Drive was locked when checked with mfstools. Now unlocked and still wont work. anyway....

I assume I need an older os on the tivo. So I was thinking Instantcake or maybe someone has an image for a philips hdr212 available via download?

I would rather not spend the $20.00 and just download an image. Can someone here help?

What os or software version is the instantcake for hdr212 or series 1?
Does anyone share series 1 tivo images anymore or are they considered old and not worth the time?

Instantcake should have the latest version, which should work fine.

Its not that images may be old, but as a unit, are TiVos intellectual property, so there are legal restrictions to distributing them.
I love my tivo. When I had the service I loved it more! Can't afford the service anymore. But as a manual recorder it works just fine for me. So I purchased Instantcake for my series 1 tivo. Works just fine. And I threw a 120 gb drive in as well. Its pretty easy to do.

The $20.00 is worth every penny.
i also have instantcake its easy to use and has worked every time for me. But it's only if you need a virgin install. I do have another windows application which I can't remember the name of right now ,that copies the disk with all recordings and everything else on the disk. Its like a ghost, but it does take a long time depending on how full the drive is. It also will expand the disk size when complete if you want it to.
i've used it quite a bit recently and it works great.
