New Tivop Setup - NO PHONE

1587 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  classicsat
I know that in the past you HAD to setup Tivo the first time with a regular phone line...then you could switch it to your network and disconnect the phone.

Is that still the case or have they finally come out with a box (or software) that allows you to do your first time setup through your network?

I apologize if this is an old one answered elsewgere a dozen times but this is my first time back to this forum in over a year.....and I couldnt find the answer on the TIVO homesite.

Lookos like I may have to get a new (3rd) Tivo after that last software update.....it has nearly disbaled the use of my wishlists. I just KNOW they're going to tell me my hard-drive is going..................AGAIN.

Any new S2 Tivo at retail should be at least 7.2x which supports setup via broadband. In fact they changed the packaging to reflect that.

The TivoHD/S3 come with ver 8.x, so no problem there.

Only problem I can think of is the Linksys USB200M v2. It requires 7.2.2(?). Real PITA if you have that adapter.

Why not get a new harddrive and InstantCake it, rather than buy a new Tivo? Although, the TivoHD is sweet and you can just transfer your service online.
THANK YOU!
I've searched through the Tivo site and seem to be reading conflicting answers....although most were written several yeas ago when I know you HAD to have a phone line.
I'm not very hardware-tech-savy,,,meaning if it means cracking open my machine and putting in a new Hard drive...I'm not that bright. Besides, I've been wanting to dual tuner Series 2 since it came out so maybe this is my final "excuse" for upgrading.

The only thing making me toy around with the idea currently is that since that latest software update the other day, my Wishlist function is all but un-useable. I'm about to call support but I allready know what they're going to tell me...........'your hard drive is going.....'

Thanks again!

If you're using quotes and/or ampersands in your wishlists you may need to delete and re-enter them. There are reports that v9.1 no longer reads quotes or ampersands.

Having a DT S2 or THD is really the way to go though...you'll never regret it.
New TiVos made since October 2005 (I think) come with 7.2.1, which is compatible with the TiVo wireless adapter, although not some newer ethernet adapters. All units with a TSN beginning in 6 have built in working ethernet.

Refurbished TiVos usually come with the factory software that would have been installed on that unit new, so for pre October 2005 units, it means 5.x or 4.x, as appropriate, needing and older ethernet adapter and ,#401, or a phone connection oto initally set up.
