Are you hooking your tivo into surround sound? If so then tivo will not make those noises (while tuned to a digital channel). Also under settings there is a option for those sounds. Maybe some how it got turned off.
New Premier XL does not make fast forward sounds
My new TiVo Premiere XL does not make the familiar fast forward sounds (Pop Goes the Weasel). Is this unit defective or have I missed something in the set-up routine? The TiVo does make other sounds - but it is silent when fast forwarding so I am puzzled.

The TiVo Premiere is connected via HDMI directly to the TV.
If it is sending DD it will not make the sounds. If it's sending PCM it will. Hasn't iy always been this way? I rememeber the same thing with my DirecTiVos anytime a program was in DD.The TiVo Premiere is connected via HDMI directly to the TV.
It's just now, with HD/digital, the programs are almost always in DD. I've seen everything from 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, 3.1, 4.0, 4.1, 5.0 and 5.1 DD from broadcast programs over the last ten years.
If I understand this correctly, it seems it is preferable to leave my audio setting at DD and to simply get over the fact that I will no longer hear Pop Goes the Weasel. If I really want to hear Pop Goes the Weasel then I should change the audio setting to PCM but then I will have overall lower sound quality for digital channels. Am I understanding the options correctly?

I use DD because I have surround sound 
The only time you will hear those noises if you tune to a analog channel (which I cant with my setup) or usually when you download a podcast or another show with stereo sound. I liked the noises too, but ive gotten over it quickly.

If you're going directly from TiVo to TV with no surround sound in between then there is no need for Dolby Digital sound. Even if your TV has "virtual surround" sound it's not going to sound much different if you change the setting to always output PCM. The only reason you need DD is if you're using a 5.1 speaker setup, and even then TV shows rarely utilize it.

So you're actually thanking them, right? Not hearing the sounds without having to set that pref is a good thing!!!
(turning off those sounds was among the very first things I did when I got a Tivo sometime close to a decade ago.)
