New HD Channels screwing us? HELP!

Hello everyone. I am new to the Forum and from what I can tell you are all are a smart bunch. My question is about the new HD channels that DirectTV is adding this month. If I understand DirectTV's explanation correctly those of us with DirectTV/Tivo receivers are forced to switch to one of ther own piece of crap, slow and untolerable DVR's. Correct? I have a Hughes HR10-250 thats a few years old. I love my TIVO and do NOT want to get one of DirectTV's HD/DVR's.EVER. Why should I pay $300 for something I still have to rent? SO, is there a solution to this? Hacking? What say you, all knowing board?

The only "solution" is to use DTV's house brand of DVR

The new HD content is sent as MPEG4 and the HR10-250 is MPEG2

There is NO way to hack the HR10-250 to make it use the new data... just as you can't put Diesel in a Gasoline engine

What are the odds of having two MPEG4 HD questions posted in this same incorrect forum less than an hour apart. Look in the next forum down for HR10-250 information. And the ONLY solution if you want to stay with DirecTV is to buy an HR20. We've been looking for solutions for over a year and that's the only one that works.

FWIW, I've had the new DVR for about 6 weeks or so and I've had no problems with it. I'm not a power-tv watcher

but it serves my purposes very well. Some operations are actually easier with it.

Also note that the HR10 can still record OTA. Just because DirecTV is offering new HD channels doesn't mean you have to give up on the HR10.

I do intend on getting the HR20 once the dust settles, but the HR10 will remain in service.

After my upgrade, the HR10 will record OTA HD, the HR20 will record satellite HD and any OTA that conflicts that the HR10 can't resolve and the GXCEBOT will record whatever is left that isn't in HD. All 3 receivers will be shared between two complete A/V systems (TV and full surround sound) in two different rooms.

Check out this thread: HR10-250 and MPEG4; Upgrade Offer

So many of us kept our TiVos. In your case, keep your TiVo for MPEG2 HD as long as you can but always for OTA and SD. Get a new receiver for $19 for HD (also SD or OTA) and $120 in programming credits. If you were going to stay with DIRECTV anyway, that covers the cost of the $4.99 mirror/lease fee for 24 months as well.

You can have the best of both worlds. Free is good.
