Well, I am not completely uncurious and did look around and learned of the numlock/keypad trick to get the character I wanted. But I couldn't get it to work while trying to set up the thread. I did not try the cut/paste from a charmap even though on reflection it is something I've done long, long ago.In Windows, find the app called Character Map, often abbreviate charmap. Every character you could think of is listed in the grid. Highlight the character and cut and paste from there. Or find the numeric keypad code, hold down the alt key, then code in the 4 digits on the number pad (won't work on the numbers above the standard keyboard), and release the alt... your character will appear.
For instance,
Alt + 0233 gives you é.
or Alt + 0228 gives you ä
