New DT didn't record #1-SP because it had been recorded!

Okay. All seems good with my new DT activated yesterday! I put in a lotta Seasons Passes.

My #1 on SP I have to record 5 episodes, Repeats and first run.

I go to watch it, and whaddya know -- it's not there.

Why?

"This episode was not recorded because the same episode appreared in the Now Playing List of the ToDo list within 28 days of this Broadcast. In Recording Options, change "Show type" to "All (with duplicates)" if you wanted it recorded each time it airs."

Now, hmmm. It might have been a re-run, and if so, it was probably recorded on my newly deactivated TiVo. But, WTF! I just activated this one!

What's happening here? A new Tivo, now with ESP? Psychic?

Check the season pass, the TiVo may be planning to record it later. You get that message for both reasons.

"This episode was not recorded because the same episode appears in the Now Playing List or the ToDo list within 28 days of this Broadcast."

It is either sitting there ready to be viewed because it was already recorded, or it is showing in the ToDo list that it will be recorded or was recently deleted.

Hope that helps
So, TiVo would pass on the first show and instead, choose a later show?

It shouldn't, normally. However, since it was newly set up it might still have been indexing guide data, and may have indexed the later showing first, and gotten confused.

Or the reason in 'recording history' might just be wrong. They sometimes are.

Although usually its because TiVo can't recognize that guide data changed.
For example getting a "Someone in your house modified the seasonpass or wishlist" for a First Run Only season pass because the show info went from generic guide data (treated as first run) to details about it showing it's a rerun.

Or unless you have a season pass set for the same show on two different channels. (Like HBO and HBO2). In that case I think the higher priority season pass take precedence even if the episode is aired earlier on the channel of the lower priority season pass.

I have seen that before, and since the TiVo was just set up, most likely the cause.

One other possibility is that there was a lower priority season pass with a show available only at that time, and the higher priority pass had more than one showing to pick from. So the TiVo can sometimes record the lower priority show first. The TiVo is amazingly smart about scheduling so that it gets you as much as it possibly can.
All interesting!! I'll go with the new guide problem as most likely. I did have another show recording at the same time -- but only one! And this is a Dual Tuner. And, the show that didn't record was the number one show -- woulda trumped all, right?

Other interesting things I notice:

Apparently TiVo and I have semantic differences. To me, First Run means a new edition while to TiVo it means I didn't record it in the past (or next<g>) 28 days.

There is no volume smoothing as in the SA8300. Some stations are very loud and others extrememly quiet.

I don't see any way to know if the station I'm on is recording on not. The other evil SA has a red mark showing it is recording.

I might discover these things smooth out or the answers reveal themselves (even though this is just a regular Series 3) or, um . . . maybe not.

I'm perpexed why the DT won't dual record all channels, instead of just one digital.

It's strange to have been a TiVoholic and go away, and come back to realize how many things I actually liked what I have always called the Scientific Atlanta POS! But I sure have missed the search and the Seasons Passes etc.

Thanks

Not if both shows require the cable box.
I rarely record over 99, but I'll keep that in mind.

If the guide data is correct TiVo goes by the "original air date" (or whatever it is called) to check to see if it First Run. If it is within 7 or so days of that date (to take into account shows like the Sopranos which appear multiple times per week) then it will think it is first run. The 28 days is a different rule. Even if you tell it to record reruns TiVo will not record the same episode twice within 28 days (once again assuming good guide data). If you want it to record those as well then you need to chose Record All Episodes.

Actually, the TiVo considers that to be a duplicate. (And it will only record duplicates if you change the season pass option to record all (with duplicates).

A first run is a show that is being shown within 28 days of the original air date in its guide data & isn't a duplicate.*

That does mean that if you have multiple airings within that 1st 28 days they get marked as "won't record because it's been recording in the last 28 days" (a duplicate)

For that mater, technically a duplicate is a program that has been recorded (or will be recorded) within the last 28 days OR a recorded show currently in your Now Playing list.

* To be sure it doesn't miss any new episodes, if a program lacks enough guide data to determine which episode it is the TiVo will treat it as First Run just in case. This can be annoying for channels like USA or Comedy Central which don't bother to provide accurate guide data for repeated or rerun episodes.
