My assumption would be something along the lines of TiVo Desktop, the ability of the router to serve up video content from a USB storage device to a networked TiVo.

Still, I‘ll never quite understand why firmware ‘updates’ delete features, as opposed to just adding features….

It could be a case of adding new features required eliminating some lesser-used features. Given strapped resources, the firmware can’t offer an endlessly growing feature set.
