Netflix changes abound...

With all the changes in Netflix recently i.e., prices doubling and now the ridiculous email from Netflix saying they're splitting the streaming and DVD websites, are there any other places to go for streaming movies to a TiVO HD? I don't believe Amazon allows streaming to HD, and the only other thing I can find on the HD is YouTube. Would the Premiere off more alternatives?

The Premiere doesn't offer anything extra.

There is Hulu+ for streaming but there are plenty of drawbacks.

Amazon does offer HD streaming however, Tivo is the ONLY Amazon enabled device that doesn't have it.

If you want Amazon streaming, get a Roku.

You are correct No TiVo currently supports Amazon's streaming service (the one you get "free" with Amazon Prime). You can rent HD moves/tv shows from amazon but that's nothing like cheap streaming from Netflix cost wise.

I believe that your TiVo supports Blockbuster, not sure what they Offer now that DishNetwork owns them.

The Premiere also support Hulu+ but I don't know if that is really a good replacement for Netflix or not as the content appears to be different.

Honestly I don't think there is any real replacement for Netflix streaming at their $8/mo price point. Which is why they can do what they are doing without worrying to much about customers leaving.

I have some questions about the "Free" streaming service that comes with Amazon Prime. When I looked at the content I saw some HD TV shows but all the moves where SD - it appeared you had to do individual rentals to get any of the Moves in HD. Do you know if that is true?

Not on Roku. HD streaming is there on Amazon Prime with Roku.

Blockbuster looks like an also-ran to me. Anyone have anything good to say about that service?

Thanks for the info.

So if I purchased Amazon prime could I stream HD content through my HTPC or would I need to purchase another box like the Roku to get the HD content?

NetFlix streaming is a joke, unless you like watching older movies and TV shows. I'm a disc-only subscriber and the new structure actually benefits me with the new pricing plan. I haven't seen anything yet worth streaming from NetFlix, mainly because I've probably already seen it.

Splitting the two services into separate companies probably benefits NetFlix, but the bottom line is that I could care less. There are far more titles available on DVD and Blu-Ray so I'm always astounded by the number of people that rave about streaming. Our society is so invested in convenience that they don't care about quality anymore. Until something better comes along, I'll take mine on Blu-Ray, please.

Take yours the way you like it. I like streaming. So shoot me. Everyone is entitled to their own likes. No matter, this is a stupid move by Netflix.

I canceled my Netflix (streaming + 1 DVD out at a time) subscription today. I've been with them for many years but just couldn't deal with a 60% price increase, which gives me nothing more in return. Netflix had already increased their prices earlier this year and this latest increase pushed me over the edge.

I'm so tired of paying more during such a bad economy. I'm about ready to cancel my Cable TV as well because it recently increased. Might be time for me to save money and live a simpler life.

Exactly. I dropped the streaming this month as there was no point in watching old movies. And now that Starz is disappearing, there is nothing worth it.

I do the 1 DVD at a time and it suits me fine, and now about 2 dollars less.

Really? I only watch HD streaming content on Netflix. My streaming queue has over 100 titles in it. I'm always finding something to watch from Netflix streaming in HD.

Although I am not looking forward to dealing with two websites from netflix for my BD rentals and HD streaming. But still for the money it's the best thing out there.

LOL ... I have to agree. Were all those nice words supposed to make us feel better about a 60% price increase? Lame! :down:

I downselected to streaming only, but I'm finding it more and more difficult to find good content. But it's still the best deal around, for us.

And how many of those HD titles are recent releases? I'll bet I've already got most of them on my server in Blu-Ray format waiting to be watched. Last time I checked I had something like 300 BD titles on my server. And I only have one website to deal with.

I tried searching the NetFlix site and all it indicates is that a title is available in DVD, Blu-Ray or streaming, but not the format in which it can be streamed. I'd like to think that you can search their library with filters to find only HD titles. Otherwise it's a crapshoot to find any HD title for streaming.

FWIW, the number of HD titles available for streaming from NetFlix are reported to be but a fraction of what can be rented on Blu-Ray. Streaming titles can vanish overnight if the movie studios decide to stop supporting NetFlix or any other streaming service.

I will, thank you very much.

Nobody is criticizing you for whatever choices you make. If streaming floats your boat then more power to you. I've just found a method where I get the best of both worlds. I can essentially stream new releases from my server on demand and I never have to worry about network issues on the WAN side of my router.

How often do you get rebuffering pauses on your HD streams? I feel lucky to get through an HD movie without at least one pause. My THD is on hardwired internet that tests at 10 Mbps.

The pauses really irritate me and if I had the choice of getting the same content at the same prices via transfers (a la Amazon) I would probably opt for that in many cases where I don't mind waiting a while.

Just a data point about HD titles:

You can select HD "genre" then select "sortable list" and sort the list by release year. By my count there are 27 HD releases for this year (so far). Not all of these are movies of course. There are PBS programs like NOVA for example.

Netflix has over 2,600 movies in HD the last time I looked. They also have over 900 seasons worth of TV series in HD as well.

Amazon has 300 HD movies and 100+ HD TV seasons in Prime streaming

From a tunnel-visioned consumer perspective, sure. From the business perspective there's no growth in the disc by mail business model but there definitely is with streaming. It's already a well-beaten dead horse.

There are too many names close to qwikster....confusing.

They missed an opportunity here. If the streaming is staying Netflix, why not call the other half DVDflix?
