Need Tivo HDR312 Modem help

I have a Series 1 Tivo HDR312. It's been sitting since we moved, since we bought a newer unit and are able to download the guide online with that one. The modem went out in the HDR312 and I had bought an external modem for it, however, since the move, I cannot find the external modem. I have looked and looked and this Series 1 Tivo can only connect through a phone line.

My question...is there a cheaper modem I can hook up to this? Will any 56k modem work? I know weaknees has them, it's where I bought the other one. I just know the other one will turn up eventually, but probably not til summer. Anyone know? I don't wanna spend a fortune on a second Tivo we'll have in the house. Thanks!

P.S. I did search the site for older stories on this problem and found someone listing a couple places that had modems for them but the sites seem to be gone now, as they are a couple years old.

Okay, you already know about using the serial port on the back of the TiVo and changing the dialing prefix and all of that.

If you have a PC with a 9 pin serial port (or even a 25 pin and an adapter) with an internal modem (and if not you can probably find an internal modem dirt cheap on Craigslist), there's a freeware program called pilotnet that was designed to let PalmPilot owner's use their computer's modems.

Of course when you Google for it you'll have to wade through a lot of airplane pilot related results.

I think, programmed and wired right, any serial modem theoretically should work.

To directly connect through PC, you want Serial PPP. Instructuctions should be out there for that, at least using XP.

What you're talking about is letting the S1 use PPP to "borrow" the PC's internet connection and not its internal modem, right?

Which would save them having to scrounge up an internal modem if they don't already have one gathering dust somewhere.

Although PilotNet has a window that lets you see the TiVo and the mothership talking to each other which is kind of cool and interesting.

Yeah, PPP will work for both XP and Vista. Haven't tried it since I upgraded to WIN7. It will also work with a serial to USB adapter (Tivo serial cable to PC USB, that is). It was rather difficult to get set up initially what with the apparent differences in Tivo serial cable wiring and modem file changes. I found that my Tivo serial cable did not need a crossover adapter while some others apparently do.

I didn't really want to hook it up to the computer. I just wanted to know if any 56k external modem would work? It wouldn't be hooked up near a computer in the house. Thanks for the help so far!

Most any external modem, 19, 28, 33, 56, should work.

I used a Best Data til it got zapped, and have used a US Robotics since.

The trick is to find an non-USB one these days.

That's pretty much what I found searching Craigslist nationwide for as far back as they still have the ads on the server.

Either of those models will probably work.

Just offering possible alternatives. It would only need to be hooked up occasionally to force an update (you do get 14 days of Guide Data). One of the ways I did PPP was with my netbook so being near a computer isn't necessary.

Not all modems will work. You need one with nvram and many don't have it.

The US Robotics Sportster modems are by far the easiest modems to configure for tivo use.
