I own a Tivo Roamio from 2006 and loved it, however Dishnetwork gave me a sweet offer so I left my beloved Tivo for a satellite service. I know lots of time has gone by and gave Dish the boot last month and don't know if I reactivate the old Roamio or buy a newer model like the Edge.

I do have a 4K TV but not much 4K content from Cox my cable provider so that is not an issue. I do plan to install Tivo Mini's in 4 rooms and live to stream out of the house.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have two Roamios, a Pro 6-tuner and a base 4 tuner model.

Purchased around 2006, they have both been active for 14 years with no problems. I also run 2 Tivo Mini's one over ethernet the other using Moca.

Personally if I were you, I would just reactivate the old Roamio. It seems to be a solid piece of equipment.

Thank you for the advise, did you upgrade your Hard Drive?

Ummm.... the Roamio DVRs were not on the market in 2006. They were introduced in 2013.

The HD Series 3 models were introduced in 2006.

Y'all made me go look it up...

Yep, you are correct. My Roamio Pro was activated January 2014, the other Roamio was October 2014.

So they've only been spinning for 6 years!

Thanks for the reality check...

Ok folks just tried to get a Cable Card from Cox and they are telling me it's no longer available.

Anyone run into this issue before?

I've heard that same complaint, it is BS from misinformed script readers.

You are probably going need to escape escalate to someone with a higher pay grade...

I ran into similar ignorance with Suddenlink last year, the tech didn't know what a cable card was, Suddenlink was/is pushing their Altice One equipment that I wanted no part of.

Finally got hold of some techs with Tivo experience and got me hooked up same day.

When putting an old box back in service (0ne that has not been active since early 2017), be sure just to power it on and give it a few days to connect to the mother ship and update the software BEFORE running Guided Setup.

Bad_Rovi database content is NOT compatible with 2016 TiVo software, and running GS before the software is updated can get an old box stuck in a boot loop.

When connecting to the mother ship, does the box have to be authorized to update the software?
I'm not sure what you're asking. Assuming the box has lifetime/all-in, it will automatically update the software to the latest release of SE3 or SE4 (whichever is in use). If you are using SE3 and you're worried that it will update to SE4, then don't worry about that, it won't happen.

If you don't have lifetime/all-in and the box has been inactive, it will still update the software to the latest version. It *might* give you a 30-day grace period of service to entice you to start the flow of dollars from your pocket to TiVo, and update guide information.

Right, that's what I'm looking for. I wanted to make sure that an unauthorized box would update software and it appears that I will. Next stupid question :), without service, can a Cablecard be authorized to receive cable channels without guide info or other Tivo functions?

The reason for this is that I'd like to have a spare Roamio, mated to a Cablecard and tuning adapter, sitting on the shelf, ready to go when my current Roamio dies. It's been acting strange lately and it would be nice to have this option.

That would depend on some factors unrelated to TiVo. IIRC, you can run guided setup without having active service, and that can include pairing a CableCard (or that step can be deferred).

A potential problem is the cable provider. In order for the pairing to remain valid, the cable provider would have to allow a paired card to remain paired indefinitely after not seeing any signals while the TiVo is inactive. They probably don't care, but that's just a guess. From their perspective it is probably just data tied to your account.

A cable card doesn't "talk" to the cable company. It's all one way. During pairing, the card receives a channel list. That list doesn't go anywhere even if the card becomes un-paired for some reason. Only problem you may have would be changes in the channel mapping with a card not connected.

I don't have a tuning adapter. That may be different.

Your guide is set by your zipcode and specific provider. It's not related to the cable card.

Right, I get that the Cablecard can't talk back. All I need to do is confirm receipt of all channels including the use of a tuning adapter. If I can do this without activating the Tivo, fine. If not, I guess I'll get to pay one month's fee just to see if it works properly. That won't exactly break the bank. :)

I activated a used Roamio a few years ago. I used it for 28 days. When I cancelled, my entire month was returned.
