My theory is this is Mark Harmon's last season and they're checking to see if fan's react well to Gary Cole.

Wasn't that already a given? I thought I read he didn't want to do this season but agreed to appear in a limited capacity.

I would agree with this. So far, Gary Cole has been "OK", but it's tough mentally not to picture him as Bill Lumbergh or Bingo Bob Russell at times. I'm hoping that will fade as the season progresses.
Gibbs is looking a little aged to be the same tough guy that he's been all these years. If they want to continue after Harmon leaves I wouldn't object to Cole. I like him.

Oh, Harmon has been looking long in the tooth for several seasons now. The mandatory retirement age for an NCIS agent (or an FBI agent for that matter) is 57. Gibbs is long past that.
57? Mark Harmon is 70. That means that Gibbs should have retired back around season 6 or 7...
While Mark Harmon is 70. The episode with Gibb's wife's and daughter's single gravestone in it showed that there was room for him. It had Gibbs' birth year already carved on it as 1954. So Gibbs is only 67. Of course that is still order than 57.
Meanwhile, Gary Cole is 65. :p
So I wonder why Sean Murray wasn't tapped to lead the team. Do they really think viewers would rather have an older outsider come on than have a familiar face running the team?

On a side note, can anyone think of a show where there's a team of people working together and the team leader character leaves and a team member is promoted and then the show continues that way? The closest I can come up with is the original CSI, where Gil left and then Catherine was promoted for the Laurence Fishburne season, but then she was demoted again in favor of Ted Danson...

Because they want to replace a "star" with a "star". With the possible exception of Rocky Carroll, there were no big names on the show other than Mark Harmon.
If the last episode is in indication of what Gibbs-less NCIS is going to be, I think the show is done.

I liked it OK. Blowed up from the inside out, what's not to like? Looks like we'll be missing Ducky, too, though.
Not like Ducky's been around much lately anyways.

I didn't think the episode was all that bad for what it was. But realistically, I'm not sure anyone really was expecting that this would last more than this season.
I liked the last episode, and i am by no means a Gary Cole fan.

I think it's OK. But I'm sure NCIS is also in the sunset years - it's been around a long time now - nearly 20 years. It's probably on the way out.

I still find NCIS better than the mess that is NCIS Hawai'i. 4 episodes in and its not growing on me. You'd think given how much CBS is pushing it, there would be some effort into making it good, or at least somehow starting the show off with a bang so I'd at least have it on for more than just background.

I like that guy with the Marty Feldman eyes.

Law & Order SVU comes to mind. I think some of the hospital shows.

I feel similarly. I have watched all the NCIS shows, and this is the first one where I can't even remember the characters, or feel I know anything about them. These shows have always been more (to me) about the character interactions, not about the crime of the week.
JMO. Only reason to watch NCIS Hawaii is to view Hawaiian landscape. Background if you're doing something else.
