My suggestion would be to run kickstart 54 to test the Hard Drive.
My TivoHD has rebooted a # of times, Welcome! powering up...
This has happened 3 times now, could it be my External Hard Drive or the actual Tivo Hard Drive, any idea?
While watching Live TV I will see it go black, then Welcome! powering up...

Ok I will try that if the unit reboots again tonight or tomorrow. Thanks,My suggestion would be to run kickstart 54 to test the Hard Drive.

I've been having the same problem with my Series 3. The drive is about six months old and passes the kickstart 54 and 57 tests.
If it loses communication with the hard drive, or if the power dips below a certain level, it'll reset.

Interesting, I found 2 recordings today partially recorded each at 26 minutes. do you think the hard drive is failing & rebooting? Then it is recording full programs since.
When we first got our pair of TiVo HD boxes, one of them rebooted regularly. We sent it back and the replacement did the same thing. The second replacement was good. We were told it was a bad power supply.
Did you check the cables? That is an issue from time to time.
Which external drive do you have? The older 500 GB unit does not seem to have the same lifetime as the newer 1 TB one.
Check the sticky in the help center- it may be a bit dated but is great troubleshooting help.

I have the Western Digital 1tb one from best buy, I can change Power Supply on my Tivo with another Tivo in my other room and see if they change which one power cycles. Then it would be a simple fix in the cord, or more so in the board & power supply?Did you check the cables? That is an issue from time to time.

to be clear, I was referring to the cables connecting to the hard disk- not the power cables. While I assume a power cable could have a problem, I have not heard of them failing.

Sometimes partial recordings are the result of a loss of signal.
The annoying thing is that if the channel disappears 5 minutes into the show and comes back a minute later the TiVo isn't smart enough to deal with that and you only get the first 5 minutes recorded.

Interesting, my signal strength is at 42 on 1 channel!
I wonder why my signal is so bad, could that be related at all to the rebooting? I can see the partial recording, but why rebooting?

Which can be fixed, although less easily than replacing the power cord.
The data cord which connects the external drive to the TiVo is notorious for causing problems also.
There are at least 2 different WD external TiVo hard drives. The more recent is so far considered much better. I am running the older version without problems but having seen so many reports of issues, I expect a failure soon. I think the newer version was released in 2010, I know I purchased my DVR Expander in 2009.I have the Western Digital 1tb one from best buy, I can change Power Supply on my Tivo with another Tivo in my other room and see if they change which one power cycles.
