resulted when I was watching a previously recorded show and all of a sudden, I lost complete control of my S3. I was brought to the Weather Channel for a "test" of some sort of national weather service nonsense. Seriously, how about some sort of warning, or a flashing message on the screen telling me it is going to change to the weather channel for a severe weather update? Ideally, it would do nothing of the sort, I really really hate the sever weather reports, but I have come to grips with the fact that I will have never be able to rid my life of these messages.

Honestly, if I was given the choice to eliminate all weather warnings but promised I would be killed by severe weather, I would sign up immediately. I hate weatherpeople, the National Weather Service, and all of their updates and love the fact that my S2 hates these updates too and doesn't subject me to them.

This appears to be a mandate of CableLabs with regards to how the TiVo responds to emergency alert messages. I'm going to be very frustrated the first time I'm watching a 10 day old recording only to have it interrupted because of an emergency alert that happened 10 days ago, but there isn't anything to do about it. TiVo is forced to bow at the alter of CableLabs if they want CableCard certification.

Not to defend CableLabs (!), but I think that this is a FCC mandate passed down through the CableLabs rules, that didn't take DVRs into consideration. Our nanny government doesn't feel that we are capable of assuming responsibility for our own lives, so we are are not allowed to opt out of this "feature".

At least with 9.1, the TiVo will switch back to the original channel after the alert.

yes, really rediculous but definitely someone's genius law. Wait for the day when your computer or DVD player does the same thing. I might destroy all things electronic then!

and also, for me anyhow most severe weather occurs in the summer time when the reruns are being replayed so won't bother me as much unless they switch to tell me I'm fixing to get 10 inches of snow in my yard

I"m actually 2 sided on this one. Part of government's job is to provide us with protection. And anything they can do to warn people about tornados, hurricanes, forest fires and other things that have potential for massive deaths, is worthwhile. On the other hand, USE IT ONLY WHEN TRULY NECCESSARY. You don't need to warn us about frost warnings, every wind storm, heavy rain, and all those other things that we better be equpped to deal with. I happen to like the concept of getting the real important messages through, just don't use it for every little disturbance.

Now TiVo on the other hand, needs to make sure its software is intelligent enough to recover from such a message coming through. Ironically, my Series 1 TiVo, perhaps because it's just plain stupid with this issue, just keeps on recording. S3 TiVos need to do the same thing, keep recording, and switch right back to the original channel the moment the broadcast alert is over.
