My 6.3e Experience

I haven't posted to here in a very long time, mostly because my TiVo has been working flawlessly. Until I received the 6.3e update on my Philips DSR-704. I then noticed that the picture was freezing and stuttering. I had to reboot several times because of complete lock-ups. It then began rebooting randomly. I tried the suggestion of unplugging the satellite in cables to see if I could watch recorded programs, but no luck.

So...I have two drives, the original 40GB Maxtor A drive and a second Seagate 160GB B drive. I threw them into my PC to run the SeaTools diagnostics. Sure enough the original Maxtor A drive had 100+ read errors. The Seagate B drive was fine.

I then downloaded Instantcake and ran it on the good Seagate drive and removed the bad Maxtor. Now all is well.

My theory is that somehow the 6.3e update is causing problems with drives that are beginning to fail but that survived just fine prior to the update. So I'm mad that this updated killed that drive (and I lost all my recordings). But I'm glad that I was able to restore with Instantcake.

Hope this helps...

Sorry you had those problems.

I recently put in a new 160gb drive from Weaknees in my DVR40. It seemed really buggy for awhile, but some cold reboots helped.

It's quite stable now.

The only issue I have now is the remote acts screwy; sometimes hitting select makes it navigate right or up.

Other than that, I'm very happy with the upgrade, especially the hugely improved speed of the menus. :)
I wouldn't let that 160 hard drive update to 6.3 if I were you, or you'll be in the same boat again.
Your issue may well have been a bad hard drive.

Many of us continue to have the issue even after replacing our drives with new ones. Many of us have run the extensive diagnostics on our drives and found no errors. In short it has been proven that this is a software issue and not a hard drive issue.

I would make sure that you do not let you unit update to 6.3e as you most likely will have reboots again.
My issues went away after about 10 days. It locked up a couple of times at first and was unable to make a phone call. Even today, if I tell it to make a call it will fail. But I noticed that it has made a couple successful calls since the update. The only outstanding issue, and I do not know if it really is an issue, is there seems to be a delay when I press any button, I never noticed this until the last update.

Consider yourself extremely lucky.....I have 3 seperate units that were all working perfectly before the software update, since then they all reboot randomly.
