I have a Lifetime subscription on a Series 2 single tuner Tivo and a Series 2 DT on a 3 year commitment at $6.95 per month with the MSD.

Let’s say I sell the single tuner Tivo – the price on the DT goes up to $12.95 per month. Now if I buy a Tivo HD from a retail store and get a 3 year prepay plan, do I once again get the MSD on the DT and pay $6.95?

Most likely no. Currently TiVo indicates the MSD is only available on new subscriptions. If you wanted to keep the DT at $6.95/month you should buy the new TiVo before you sell the lifetime single tuner one so you always have a qualifying subscription for the MSD.

I believe what you are saying is correct as I had 4 pioneer tivos; bought an S3 and got the MSD of $6.95/month. However, I now have one too many tivos and am concerned that if I decommission one of the S2's that tivo may up my cost on the S3. I wouldn't transfer the service from the S2 to the S3. What do you think tivo would do?

I'm somewhat hesitant to sell the Lifetime Tivo - the unit is 5 years old, I'm not sure how much longer it will last, and I'm not sure not sure how much money I can get for it.

If I take the Tivo out of daily service, how often does it need to connect to the Tivo service in order to maintain MSD for the other Tivos? Should this extend it's lifespan?

I believe it has to call in at least once every 6 months to be considered active. As far as extending its life maybe if you leave it in place so you don't have to move it around and just pull the plug. But moving it around into and out of storage might do just as much damage as leaving it running.

No. However, you should be able to get the MSD discount on the Tivo HD if you decide to go with the monthly plan instead of the 3-year prepaid plan. The DT Tivo becomes your primary subscription which then meets the MSD requirement. Any additional Tivo added to your account should qualify for the MSD payment plan. You'll make out better by going with a 3-year commitment at $6.95 per month instead of prepaying for three years @ $8.31 monthly. Better still, get the 3-year prepaid plan on the DT and then add the Tivo HD for $6.95 per month. If you're currently in a multi-year commitment with the DT then you might want to call Tivo to see what your options are.

and the OP will start paying $6.00 more every month ($12.95) for the same subscription.

Factor in the extra $6 bucks/mo for the DT and the best option is too subscribe any new Tivo with a 3 year prepay before dumping the lifetime unit. That would cost 8.31 (new tivo) + 6.95(DT tivo) = 15.26/mo vs. 12.95(DT tivo) + 6.95(new tivo) = 19.90.mo
