Does anyone actually understand this movie? I actually own the DVD and have attempted to watch is several times, but other than the Naomi Watts diddling herself scene, I just don't seem to get it. I've always been intrigued with David Lynch movies, but for some reason I just can't get this one.

When I saw it here, I thought it might have something to do with the fact that the movie started out as an ABC TV pilot, which for some reason was rejected (why would ABC think this wouldn't make a great series?!?

), and Lynch then shot more footage and repurposed it into a movie.

The story behind this story is almost as surreal as the story itself!

I am daft, because no matter how many times I watch this or Eraserhead I never understand them. Or Donnie Darko.
I read all the theories and websites and explanations by those more savvy than I but I am still lost.
Which wouldn't mean anything to me at all, except I love all three movies. I have all of them permanently on my sleeproom DVR and often use them to fall asleep to.
Something about the mood they evoke, I guess. Still think that Rebekah Cel Rio Cryin'/Llorando is one of the most beautiful vocals I have ever heard.

The first (and only) time I watched Eraserhead is when I rented it from Netflix and started watching it in my dark bedroom while lying in bed. I began to doze off and kept coming in and out of sleep. The film's audio and visuals became part of my half-awake/half-asleep state. Strange though it was, it kind of elevated the film a bit. So now, years later, I'm afraid if I watch it it won't hold up to the weird experience of falling asleep and incorporating it into my dreams somewhat.

It's a great movie to sleep to.
Dialogue is very minimal, no crash bangs, and the music lulls you right along.

And when the "baby" started mewling and crying, I was drifting into sleep and kept wondering, "What *is* that noise?"

Right there with you on Donnie Darko. My BIL and SIL raved about that movie for years, so I finally watched it. I can best sum it up with one word: "huh?".

I'm the kind of person to whom this particular "Huh?" meant "I wasted 2 hours of my life for this?".

I'm a huge David Lynch fan, and I think Mulholland Dr. is easily some of his best work. I loved it when I first saw it in the theater, and I still love it. Glad to see it is getting the Criterion treatment.
