Just so nobody else feels they have to say this - "What? MTV used to play music?!"

Now, then...

VH1C has been playing classic MTV bits (live performances, bumpers, short films and series segments - albeit not whole episodes of anything) all weekend long and that continues all day today thru midnight (Eastern).

Among that will be a full replay of the channel's first broadcast hour, with commercials and technical difficulties included (they screwed up practically all of Mark Goodman's VJ bits), and starting with the 15-minute launch countdown sequence. It's scheduled today, Monday 8/1 at 8 AM, 1 PM and 9 PM.

If you enjoy that, there's a YouTube channel called "MTVTheFirst24" that has at least the first seven hours of that day uploaded.

Totally awesome! :D

Oh how I miss those days...we watched that channel so much back in those days...couldn't wait to see all the different videos each artist of the day put out.

I have no idea why they even call it MTV anymore...or why they bother having their "Video Music Awards". I guess it's a good venue to hawk their next projects or colognes or whatever.
Seems really funny to me that VH1 is playing the first hour of MTV. Does MTV even care?

It's not even VH1, it's VH1 Classic that is doing it.

You'd think for the 30th anniversary of MTV, they'd do something *on* MTV. Then again, I suppose, how relevant is the beginning of MTV to the current generation?
I remember "MTV 10". I can't believe that was 20 years ago! So little has happened on MTV since then.

Nope all this weekend they celebrated with a Jersey Shore marathon. So with that tells you how much they care.
Is this show going to be repeated? Heck, I don't even know what # VH1 Classic is on my system. (MTV is 43, VH1 is 44)
VH1 Classic is usually going to be somewhere up in the digital tier of channels, along with some of the more esoteric MTV channels (MTV Hits and MTV2).

Unfortunately, it looks like MTV30 has been running since yesterday, and ends tonight.
The commercials were awesome. And the 'oh so proud' bits about being in Stereo.'

And now I know the answer to the never asked trivia question, what was the 2ND video shown on MTV? Pat Benatar "You Better Run"

Don't forget to order you radio dial sticker so you know what channel to tune to to hear it in stereo.

I had completely forgotten that cable companies used to offer FM and other signals through your stereo. I was trying to remember how MTV did that last night while watching, until it was mentioned here. I actually did have that service when I lived in San Diego. It was pretty awesome in it's day :)

Our cable company used to program maybe 30 or 40 radio stations on cable radio. I swear, the local stations came in clearer with cable than with an antenna, and we were only 5 miles from the transmitter.

To this day, I have trouble with the signals on the local FM stations in my house, on more than one TV. The difference is, today you can stream most local FM stations.

My cable company did the same thing - mainly with low-power college stations that you couldn't get over the air, although they did have a 24-hour BBC World Service feed (which was a godsend for those of us who wanted to hear English sports highlights but couldn't because BBCWS didn't have any sports reports during the time the shortwave signal reached western North America).

Somebody should have gotten The Buggles to do a new video for the occasion:

"Reality Killed The Video Star"
As a high schooler, I DJ'd at a community station that only aired over cable. I had alligator clips from a live cable wire to the antenna of my boom box. Worked great-ish :)

That would be classic.
Someone has done a song called "Internet killed the video star". It's not up to the Buggles standard, though.

Heres good one thats sung to Public Enemy "911 is a Joke".

I remember the first time I HEARD about MTV. It was before we even had cable or cable was readily available and a friend of mine had gone on a trip and the person's house he was at had cable. They had MTV and he was trying to describe MTV to me. Specifically he was trying to explain the video for Rock the Casbah by The Clash.

He was telling me about a little armadillo running across the screen. It is amazing how much time as a "yute" I spent watching music videos on MTV. We would watch for hours and hours and hours and hours.
