Since MRS is already enabled and working on the RCN 14.9 boxes I'm guessing we will see MRS on the retail platform early next year. The question in my mind is whether or not it will be switched on before the "major upgrade" TiVodesign mentioned on her twitter feed. I'm hoping they will turn it on once 14.9 is rolled out to the entire series 4 footprint.
MRS plans, experience buying a premiere elite
Today I ordered a premiere elite, having been happy with my premiere xl to date (though I miss the vcd on my series 3).
There was essentially no wiggle room on lifetime subscription costs or others, beyond the ability to throw in an accessory. I suppose this is reasonable for a new product.
More significantly, I asked about the availability of MRS. The salesperson knew the difference between MRV and MRS and was actually quite helpful.
He said they had just gone through training on MRS, that they were allowed to talk about it if asked, and they were to say it was "coming soon". I asked about the typical delay between receiving training on a feature and its availability and he said it had been, in his experience, three to six months. He was very clear that MRS would allow streaming of copy protected content. He confirmed the method of accessing MRS would be the same as MRV today- which he seemed to agree was frustrating (paging down through all my recordings to get to a folder to then search through is annoying).
I also asked about streaming video to the iPad. He couched this as his opinion- but I presume there is some water cooler talk behind it- saying that there is a suit against a cable company (time Warner?) for streaming to an iPad, claiming it is violating the distribution rights, particularly since the app in question streams an unencrypted mpeg stream, over wireless that may or may not be protected depending on customer configs. TiVo may believe the encryption and restrictions on TiVo-TiVo transfers will protect them with MRS. It would seem likely that a number of MSO's etc will get into this sort of thing if the lawsuit clarifies the issue to allow it.
Thought it was worthwhile to share.
If MRS comes along, we will likely make the premiere into almost entirely an MRS viewer of the elite in a second room, with recording the very rare more-than-four tuner conflict, archiving older shows, etc. It will also be a good system to use component out of so that it can run through the sling box.

That doesn't sound right to me. They are not going to train low level reps on new features 3-6 months in advance. Maybe they train the reps when they believe a new release should be ready, but by the time the new version is actually stable enough to distribute several months have elapsed.That doesn't sound right to me. RCN provides support for RCN TiVos afaik. I'm not saying it's not possible but I don't think it is the same group handling support.Remember it is available with the partner DVR's. Maybe that is why he got trained

But he wasn't talking about this specific feature. He was just talking about training for reps for new any new features. I do not believe the rep when he says they get trained 3-6 months before the release of the feature. These jobs tend to be high turnover. Yeah I'm being vague..
What law gives cable companies the right to decide what devices you should be allowed to view content on? If I pay for cable service to my home then why shouldn't I be able to take that cable feed and do whatever I like with it as long as I am not sharing it to others who did not pay for it?
Because your cable co says otherwise. They and the content owner OWN the distribution rights and have the right to tell you where and when you can view the content.
I don't like it either but thats the nature of the contracts. You did not buy the content, just the licence to use it in a specific mannor they allow.
