It does matter in the limited sense that the s/w is compatible.That does not matter.. it is tied to a chip on the motherboard... So you could theoretically move that chip over... but then you might have TWO busted Tivos.
No matter how, make a backup just in case.You will not be able to access any of the programming after you install the 1TB in the new TiVo. You should also make sure there aren't any problems with the hard drive.
Is the replacement TiVo the exact same model as your old one?
Do you have to send the old S3 back to TiVo?I've been having issues with my S3 TiVo purchased 6 years ago when they were first available. Over the summer, the cablecards failed and I replaced them. Just over a week ago, the system went into a cycle of random reboots which I eventually tracked down to what I thought at the time was bad cablecards. If I pulled both cablecards the TiVo ran fine. I could install the second cablecard and the system still ran fine (albiet as a single tuner system). The moment I installed the first card the system rebooted over and over again. I called Comcast and managed to get 2 brand new cablecards and the TiVo ran fine for a week. Last night I came home from work and my wife told me our TiVo was back to constant rebooting. Again I was back to the same mode, 2nd card fine, inserting the first card caused the reboot cycles.
I called TiVo and they are sending me a new S3 (I'm assuming it's really a refurb).
My question is about moving the HD. I installed a 1TB drive into this TiVo shortly after buying the TiVo. I plan on running the new TiVo with the drive it comes with for a couple of week just to verify that it runs fine. After that, I want to swap the 1TB into the new TiVo. Will I have any issues if everything else seems to be running fine. I'd like to save all the programming on it if possible.
Also any other comments on the above mentioned issues would be appreciated.
