I actually greatly enjoyed this episode. The season has been a little stale (except the guest stars have been a hoot, overall) but this episode really saved it for me: very well done. The mystery of the shooting was (as always) trivial to figure out, but the mystery woman/cab driver was great, and Tony Shalhoub at the end did an excellent job. I thought for a second it was going to be really over the top, but it was actually quite touching.

I thought Monk would realize that he'd never seen the woman before but that he knew her voice from some mystery or other, where he'd heard it on the phone or a tape or something. Having it be Trudy's eyes, and he unconsciously realized it but couldn't understand it, was very in character for him and yet still something we couldn't guess, and a nice reveal.

Kudos!

Yeah, good episode. I was really stumped on the mystery, personally.
That moment between Monk and Maria was well done by Shaloub. It was well done of the writers to have it be her eyes and how they got to him.

I loved Randy in his super hero pjs!
I liked this one too. Very touching and it does make you see the good that organ donation can do.
Funny, I've been to the commuter train terminal in San Francisco, and I don't remember it looking quite so much like Union Station in Los Angeles. :D
Yeah, Randy's PJ's were great. Loved his superhero pose at the end with the garbage can as a shield, then Stottlemeyer looks at his own little badge :D

I also enjoyed Donal Logue's character. Although I would never have given him $50 for that bet: it was cheap and grammatically incorrect! No money for bad grammar! I think my English teacher in 10th grade may have said that. Or something like that. But it was funny that Stottlemeyer knew immediately that Gully had ripped off Monk's wallet, and was just letting him use it to buy drinks until he had to leave. One of the best parts of this show is they make Stottlemeyer a reasonably intelligent guy on his own, not some bumbling idiot cop as they would have in some shows. It's just no one can do what Monk can do!
I loved the episode. Much like with Psych, I'm counting the days until this comes back.
Best episode of the season, and I greatly enjoyed this season of Monk too. :)
I liked when Stottlemeyer saw Randy's PJ's for the first time and started giving him crap about them. Then someone else yells "Captain" and Stottlemeyer says "Which one?" Great line!
I have to admit that a good 40 minutes in, I actually said out loud "Where the hell is this going?"

Very nice episode. Decent mystery, tied together well, touching. One of the best Monk episodes to date.
I really liked this episode. Agreed that it was one of the best this season. I was surprisingly touched by the cornea revelation, as "corny" as it was.
I was impressed that I figured out the organ donation thing when they mentioned it at the bar. Usually those things fly right by me.

And wow, what a touching ending. Had me crying. :(
A question, can you find out the identity of donors in the US, or was that just for the show?

One of the best Monk episodes in a long time, nevertheless.

Just for the show.

A know a guy that had to jump through serious hoops to find out who his son's organs went through. You could write letters to & from each other, but they went back and forth through an agency, which blacked out any pertinent data. The guy I knew had his own blackroom and used some of the chemicals to "unblackout" the data so he could finally find out the recipient's info. He struck up a good friendship with the recipient and has visited them on occasion.

I'm surprised to hear it was this difficult for him. My sister donated bone marrow and after a year the recipient requested to meet my sister. My sister agreed and the agency passed the contact info on to both of them. Maybe different agencies do it differently.
Sean's Mom was given a certificate giving her certain specifics of who her daughter's organs-including corneas-went to (age, sex, family, that kind of thing.) I am reasonably certain she would have to jump through some hoops to find out the personal information.
I received a kidney and pancreas in '96. The donor's mother wrote a letter to the transplant consortium stating that she wanted to meet the recipients. The transplant co-ordinator called me and asked if I wanted to meet the mother and I said yes. We each received the other's phone number. I met her in a restaurant and we talked for about two hours. It was interesting and a normal thing to do, according to the transplant co-ordinator.

I have to admit I was totally bored by this episode until Captain America showed up. Then Monk meeting Maria and the connection had me on my couch bawling. Just four months ago when my husband died, his corneas were donated and I received a letter telling me that because of his donation two people can see again. It was actually nice to know, even thru a fiction story, that the transplants stuff is real. I am saving this episode.

I would feel just as Monk did if I could find the people with Jim's eyes. To see them once more and alive, not just in a photo.

In a similar vein, my wife's sister died as the result of an auto accident. The same date as Maria's tattoo. And her corneas were also donated. It was quite a moment when my wife saw the tattoo and put the dates together.

Wow! :( I think I would have lost it!

Great episode. I'll have to watch it again. I'm sure I missed some funny Capt. America stuff.
