How can I tell what the other tuners are watching? I want to be able to swap and keep two shows "recording" or at lease saving 30 minutes. I can only do that if the main TiVo is set to one of the channels I want to swap. I'm used to a 2-tuner TiVo on each tv and I just switched to one TiVo and 2 minis. Still trying to learn the tricks.

First off, The Mini does not need a tuner 24/7, its released after 4 hrs on idle, or release by Tivo button. You can also watch a recording and not use a tuner. When you do need a tuner, it will get one which is not recording.

I understand it "doesn't need" a tuner. You can watch from a recording. My question is, "how can I watch two shows at the same time on a mini and keep the 30 minute buffer going on both?"

I like to watch a show until I see a commercial and then switch tuners and then go back to tuner #1. I think many people use TiVo this way. It worked great on my series 2 and my TiVo HD. I can't do it on a mini. At least I cant figure out how.

You can't. To do this, you would have to release the current tuner.

Strange thing is it sometimes works with the Enter/Last button. Two programs are both buffering 30 mins. It doesn't always work. My guess is that I got lucky and one (or maybe both?) of these channels is being "watched" on the main TiVo.

That's it. It's because the tuner the mini chose was already on the channel, so it had the buffer.

This is my main issue with the mini, not being able to cycle through a available tuners. As I mentioned in another thread, if this screws up thr main tivo user, then add a setting to designate which tuners the minis have access to. So the main Tivo can lock say 3 or 4 and the other 2 or 3 would be the ones available to the mini to cycle through.

Thus would make the mini much more enjoyable.

I've only had a Roamio and my minis for three days and I already have a few simple ideas that would make the user experience so much better. My question is this, "why can't the TiVo folks discover these as well? Don't they have testers or engineers? A few simple changes. It really makes me wonder if they care or,have a clue."

So what you can do is go to your main tivo unit(the one you are stealing the tuner from) and set the tuners to the channels you want to watch on the mini. Then when you goto the mini and turn to one of those channels, it will use the tuner that already is on the channel, on the main tivo, thus it will have the buffer.

I think this is the way it works as I was able to do this last night, being able to swap (with the Enter key) between the football game and tennis. All the while, BOTH channels maintained their buffers.

The key is to NOT change to a channel that is not being viewed on one of the tuners on the main tivo, otherwise you will lose the buffer.
