When creating a MFSbackup from a 500 GIG drive (using the "-s" option) to shrink MFS should the just the initial "SCANNING SOURCE DRIVE, PLEASE WAIT A MOMENT" part take (so far) 7+ hours or is there some other issue?

Using: mfsbackup -f 9999 1so /mnt/backup.bak /dev/hdb as the command line.

DMA is on for both drives.

Try putting the Tivo drive on a separate IDE bus than the FAT32 drive (secondary master seems to work best for me). You also need a "-" in front of the "1so" switch. Your command line should then look like this:

Code:
mfsbackup -f 9999 -1so /mnt/backup.bak /dev/hdc

Thanks .... ooops, the missing "-" was a typo in the message. I finally decided to get an Instantcake disk. I had my wife doing all the hardware for me so it was easier and quicker.
