On live TV the maximum buffer size I believe is 30 minutes at which point the playback will resume 30 minutes delayed from live. For pre-recorded programs there is no time limit since there is no buffering involved. Next time just hit the record button to record the game - that way you make sure it will record the whole thing so you can watch it later.
Maximum Pause Time?
Does the Tivo HD have a maximum time that it will pause? I put it on pause yesterday during a football game while I mowed the yard. When I came back in an hour or so later, the TV was playing away, the pause having long since been forgotten. In fact, setting it to pause then caused the pause to quit after a few seconds, if that long.
This happened before, though I am not sure why. This time I think I went to the Tivo screen and then back to live TV to get it to start pausing again - though I had basically missed most of the game. (I could have rewound to the start, but who wants to watch a game when you now know the score?)
This is really annoying....

Recording the show also has the added advantage of not having to worry about accidentally hitting the wrong remote button, changing the channel, and flushing the buffer. It's no big deal watching tv live, but when you're halfway back in the buffer...poof, it's gone.

Anytime you have something you want to watch you hit record, why would you pause it and come back an hour later and expect it to be paused when the buffer is 30 minutes. If it's something you want to watch you hit record, that way you know it will be there to watch at a later time.
I wish the Tivo would give you some kind of warning if you try to change the channel while watching a delayed program. If I knew a buffer was there I would be aware of this, but it is not "clearly obvious", though I imagine it is buried in the manual somewhere. I expected to be able to whip through the show really quickly, watching the key plays, when I was done. That was interrupted. I believe my Dish receiver did much better than that. Just disk space. I wonder if anyone out there has hacked their tivos and added a better HD and tweaked the configuration to increase that buffer size. I imagine that it is possible, but as previous posters have mentioned, it is easy to hit record if you are pausing live TV--that way you know that the entirety of the program will be preserved.andrews777 said:Why limit the buffer artificially to 30 minutes anyway?
If it's something I'm watching and I need to pause it, like for a phone call, I will always hit the record button because you never know how long you will be away or if the TiVo needs to record something else. This way you know the show will be there to finish watching later.
You don't need a bigger HDD, but the tivo app could be patched for a bigger buffer, or at least could on previous versions.
TiVo has had in their suggestion box over the years different buffer related things you could vote on, including longer buffer time, buffers being forgiving of channel flipping (handling the "oops" scenario where changing channels nukes the entire past buffer,) different warnings when moving away from the buffer (when you're not realtime,) etc. I can't find the suggestion box page right now, but if you find it you can vote on some of these issues. Eventually, recommendations from the suggestion box have made it into TiVo releases. Let them know what you'd like to see.
My Dish 522 DVRs had much bigger buffers and would warn you before you skipped away from a buffer. (I think the "stop" button was the only way to skip the warning.)
I remember hearing how much better the Tivo was when people were talking about it, but I am still not as pleased with my 2 Tivo HD units. I like some things, but the Tivo seems harder to use.
