I'm liking Luck, but I do understand the horse racing stuff.

I had hazy idea how Claiming worked but it wasn't until I read the glossary in the Episode 1 thread that I got the details. That came in handy on this show.

I love my old bud, real Chicago cop, Dennis Farina.

The show has quite a cast considering it has Dustin Hoffman (producer, too) and Nick Nolte. Who wouldda thought they'd be on a TV series together?

Can we tell that the jockey lass is Irish by how she's always wearing green?

Hey, It's Earl Brown from Deadwood. A lotta Deadwood favorites show up for Milch again.

I didn't get who he was supposed to doing the claiming for. Escalante thought it was for Ace?

How 'bout how lover boy got it? He was lucky to get out alive.

Wouldn't an insurance company see that a horse with a $13,000,000 policy doesn't just break both legs on his own?

"We have to get them." Who? "Mike" and his crew?

I haven't seen it mentioned that Milch has owned horses for years.

Do they speak English on this show? I've watched two episodes now and I've never had a more difficult time trying to understand what the actors are actually saying. Its like they were all told to talk with their mouths closed

:D It's not as bad as say, South Park.

I turn on closed captioning to get it all, because it does have some intense and subtle drama with a lot of wheels within wheels.

The HBO site 'splains some of the the horsey stuff. http://www.hbo.com/#/luck/about/article/glossary.html
It's definitely tricky to follow the dialog. They talked pretty much the same way in John from Cincinnati and Deadwood. It's easier to understand as you get used to it.

I thought I was the only one having this problem, and I'll be honest, 2 shows in and I really don't know what's going on. Also, did those guys win the $2M on a fluke or did they have some insight? What is the Dustin Hoffman character up to?

They won the $2,687,768 (?). Jerry had their picks. He's the wizard.
The main gamble was picking ("singling") only Escalante's horse "Mon Grateau" number 5 in the 4th race.

They with boxed the other races - played with more than one horse. That's why they knew they had won. They had tickets that had the winners of races 3-8 and every horse in the 8th race. "The "Bug" jockey's longshot horse breaks down but when the second longshot won the 8th they got the biggest $2.7M payout and Marcus says, "15 consolations," or 15 more at maybe 25% of the pool each!

They do a decent job of explaining some of the Racetrack jargon without it holding back the story (although I'm don't know if my opinion holds for non pony player types)

I love my old bud, real Chicago cop, Dennis Farina.
I liked him on "Crime Story" (where he played a Chicago Cop) and his guest spots on "Miami Vice" (where he played a gangster)
I didn't get who he was supposed to doing the claiming for. Escalante thought it was for Ace?
Esclante put his horse in a claiming race probably to make him eligible for"Starter Allowance" races (where in order to start you must have raced in a claiming race, but a Starter Allowance is kind of like a "Stakes Race for Claimers"). That's why he put him in for a lower price and raced him in Front Wraps -- to make it look like the horse was injured or in decline. Someone leaked this info to "The Cowboy" (who won the shake against Lonnie(?) -- I think that was the degenerate in question), who made the claim. It should be obvious that Escalante doesn't like anyone saying Anything about his horses.

How 'bout how lover boy got it? He was lucky to get out alive.
One kind of figured there was more going on there, as the babes were moderately hot and he is --lets face it-- a total degenerate

The incident described is very similar to what happened to Alydar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alydar. The insurance company did investigate, but ended up paying the claim.

Definitely Mike (who I think is Micheal Gambon) I'm pretty sure that the whole "buy Santa Anita" thing is a plot by Hoffman to get back at Mike

I mentioned it in the discussion of the preview of the first episode that took place back when it aired.

They won the $2,600,000. Jerry had their picks. He's the wizard.
The main gamble was picking ("singling") only Escalante's 4 horse in the 4th race.

They with boxed the other races - played with more than one horse. That's why they knew they had won. They had tickets that had the winners of races 1-6 and every horse in the 7th race. When the second longshot won the 7th they got the biggest $2M payout.
Don't take this personally, as I hate to "out geek" anyone, but you made a couple of small mistakes that I feel the need to correct:
The Degenerates play was a Pick 6 but the Pick 6 Sequence starts with the 3rd race, their single was in Race 4, but that was the 2nd race in the Pick 6. They were alive to All in the 8th (last) race (which is every horse-players fantasy).
They actually won more than $2.6mil as in addition to their Pick6 they had 5/6 multiple times, and hitting 5/6 in the Pick6 wins you a consolation (usually a split of 25% of the pool) with other 5/6 winners. They actually mentioned this, but it isn't totally relevant to the ongoing story.
Picking more than one horse in a "horizontal" bet (Daily Double, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 6) is called "spreading" -- "Boxing" is picking multiple horses in a "vertical" bet (Exacta, Trifecta, Superfecta Hi-5) and picking all of them to finish in any position (1st through 5th)
Thanks again, tiassa.

I watched the first ep for the third time with captioning on, picking up even more detail. Marcus says "15 consolations" so "the degenerates" have 15 more winning bets.

DiRossi is name of the mobster who owns the restaurant club. He gives all kinds of respect to Ace for his management ability.

Gus winning the slots and paying taxes on it is to give him a legit source of the $2million Ace paid for the horse. The horse came from Ireland.

There's an after show where the producer explains that a Bug is first year rookie jockey and says what a Pick 6 is.

..and it's for this reason that I have to give up this show. It's too complicated (for me) and with so many other shows building up on my TiVo I couldn't invest the time in re-watching an episode or researching websites to fully understand. I realize that it's me and a lot of other people are enjoying this for what it is so kudos to you guys.
Now for a show like The Walking Dead...
