Loss of Sound

1280 Views 21 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  digital_S
Gents,

It might just be a coincidence but after several unexpected power cuts yesterday I appear to have lost all sound from the Tivo. I've checked pass through (Aux button) and sound is fine. Programmes recorded prior to the power loss have sound those post do not.

Have checked all cables and all appear fine.

Any bright ideas?

Thanks

Try restart Tivo from the option under system menu (if I recall).

A common Tivo problem where the sound chip does not initialise properly on power up.

Automan,

I should have known that. Now working perfectly.

Thanks very much.

Take a look at my no sound script if this happens a lot.
( it reboots automatically if the sound chip didn't initialise correctly )
I lost my sound the other day - All these years and it suddenly went!
I tried a few soft and hard resets, both resulting in no sound.

I didn't even have any sound via 'Aux' (my freeview box)!!

I read up on 2 particular threads:
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=199341
and
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=370101
...but none of the replies helped.

I did consider a new power supply, but am I right in thinking it doesnt always make any difference?

What about, as said in the 2nd link, (post #2) "Try increasing the voltage on the 5V line by turning the blue pot on the PSU clockwise a few degrees."

Does that mean turning a dial on the psu with a screwdriver or by hand??
(ive not seen inside my TiVo for ages!)

In the end, I just left it and luckily the next day, found the sound was back! (Could a daily call and the indexing, have made any difference?)

I won't even bother trying with any script - last thing I want to do is "brick" my TiVo!! (I don't have a cachecard either)

Sure you Freeview box was not the cause?

It may well have been, as I plugged the scart lead direct from the freeview box to the tv and still no sound.
Although I selected an analogue channel on the TiVo (whilst I still have them) and there was no sound there either!
Glad it didn't last long. (Touch wood the same problem doesnt re-occur!)
Well the problem has happened again!

Since I put the box in standby last night, to pressing the TiVo button this afternoon, the sound went during that time!

Obviously since my last posts, it's been over 3 weeks since the sound last went.

I've done a soft reset, a hard reset and another soft reset and still no sound!
I'll just leave it again like last time... (my recordings are still recorded with sound - so it must be the output that's the problem)
Why do you put the box into standby?

That will make Tivo reboot every hour trying to get a video signal.

Best to leave your STB on 24/7

Automan.
My stb is and always has been on 24/7. I mean my TiVo in "standby".
Sorry to whitter on - seems like I've stumped most of you... ??
Just to add that I plugged my freeview box, direct via scart to the tv (obviously instead of going through TiVo) unfortunately no sound at all! (all very odd)

I took the freeview box upstairs and plugged it in (via scart) to the tv in our spare room and it works perfectly.

Confused as I was, I returned the box downstairs direct to the tv and again, no sound - and still no sound through the TiVo! (TiVo menu still has no sound either!):confused::confused:

Does that mean the problem might be my shiny new flat screen tv?
(I know it's not easy to figure out without actually being here!)
I would still suspect the Freeview box is the cause assuming the TV still plays back your recordings with sound using the same scart socket on the TV

So that's telling you it's either the Freeview box, the TV or the scart lead.

So that's telling you the Freeview box is ok, and the scart is probably ok (is it fully wired scart lead or only some of the pins?)

So....

Probably. Try the tv from the bedroom in place of the shiny new one - **with all other things (scart leads etc) remaining the same**. If that works then you know it's the new tv. :(

No, sorry if I confused you - Everything I do on the TiVo doesn't have sound. The menu selection, selecting programs and the recordings.
Basically, I know the recordings have sound (based on last time the sound went - when the sound came back, the recordings which were recorded whilst the sound wasn't working, had sound!) So it must be the output!
That is unusual, the common Tivo sound fault effects the input stage.

Have you got an amp or something you could hook up the the phono stereo output jacks on Tivo to see if that works?

Automan.
It's not the TiVo that's faulty - that's a red herring!

i.e. fault occurs with no TiVo connected!

Well, luckily the sound has now returned, hopefully it won't go again! (Still no idea what was/is the cause)

I connected up an ipod dock anyway (all I had to hand at the time) and muted the tv - The sound was working fine, so if unfortunately it does go again, I'll test that again and then report back.

Cheers Automan

Oh, so the fault is definately with my TV?
^ see my post above (#13)

What with testing the freeview box on the bedroom tv, we can rule that out!

The scart lead i've tried on other equipment and it works fine (even used another scart lead and that didnt make any difference)
The pins are all there - fully wired!

So it's the TV then!? Any idea if there's anything I can do to correct this issue?

I dont want to have to send it away for repair as it seems to be a temporary fault (the sound is currently working!)

I'll still check the sound via the phono stereo output jacks on TiVo, if/when the sound goes again!
Plus may aswell carry the TiVo upstairs and connect it direct to the bedroom tv and see if a random program in 'now playing', plays with sound! (I'm presuming it will)
