Long Tivo pause, but were back with a few questions.

We have had our Tivo on vacation pause for about 5-6 months now because we have been out of the country for a few periods of time. We have a Series 2 and I just spent the past couple days on a dial up line (just ordered a long ethernet cord...) doing the latest update.

Here are the questions:

1. The guide seems much slower than we remembered. Its slower than the Motorola DVR in the living room. Its especially slow when viewing the guide and scrolling pages up and down, it can take 1-2 seconds to display the info on the new page, which makes going through 70 channels a 10-15 second job. i remember it being very snappy and being able to flick pages very quickly.

2. We are on a 6.95 plan, if we get a second Tivo, a new HD one, will it count as a second and what would the rate be for monthly? The Tivo website does not make it very clear.

Thanks, and on to reading a ton to catch up to months of changes.

1. It is probably slow because you just downloaded a lot of guide data and the CPU is indexing. Hopefully it will speed up in a day or so.

2. I think it would be considered your first TiVo since the one you have is now at the discounted rate. How much you would pay would depend on the number of years you signed up for. I know there are 1, 2, and 3 years plans, but don't know the prices for each off the top of my head. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

If you only have one box on your account and are paying $6.95, you are on a retention plan. If you have two boxes already, then the next one will qualify for $6/month off whichever monthly plan you select.

You will have to confirm with Tivo, but I'm almost positive that if you add another box, you will do so at the "full rate", the best being $299 for 3 years prepay (about $8.31 a month).

This makes sense to me, since, if you add another box, Tivo is reasonably sure they don't need to "retain" you.

(The only other way I can think of that your current box is on a $6.95 plan is if you activated it with an old service gift certificate / gift card when you had another box on the account. Then that box is month-to-month).
Thanks for the replies. I honestly don't remember how the price came down to 6.99 but i can tell you we have only ever had one box at a time.
As to speeding up, I hope so, we are now in day 3 after download/upgrade and the slowdown is still there.
When you talk about the "speed" problems, what release(s)/boxes are you comparing?

The same exact Series 2 6 months ago and now after the latest update.

I did notice last night that it is slightly speedier. And it works better in grid mode, as opposed to the Tivo mode. Its now on par with the Motorola DVR, so its OK. But not speedy as it used to be.

You also have the option of replacing your existing Series2 with the TivoHD while maintaining the $6.95/mo rate. To do that, you would login to Tivo.com, select Manage My Account, and Change My Service Number. Replace your existing service number with the service number for your new TivoHD.

Really? Fantastic. We only use the Series 2 in the bedroom because its so cheap and I would hate to lose the deal, but if I can replace it with a TivoHD that would be a great deal indeed.
Would I get a TivoHD from the store? Rather than through tivo.com? Then simply replace the numbers under the account management and its ready to go?
