Locating TiVo Server

As I was losing space on on TiVo, I purchased a 3T external hard drive and hooked that up to my computer. I was able to set a folder (J:\Tivo) and download my shows to free up some extra space. However, both of my TiVo do not see this server.

I have tried using both TiVo Beacon and Bonjour. I have tried changing the Sharing Level to Full, Automatic, and Custom. Each change, I pause and resume the server.

I don't know if I should have created a "shared folder" on J:\ (I read this was one way to "trick" Windows to do a backup on this type of drive.)

I am hoping that it is something pretty simple otherwise I guess I might be burning some DVDs

Try this:

Create a shortcut on your desktop that points to your new hard drive.
Double click it to verify that it works.
Open your My Tivo Recordings folder and drag and drop the shortcut into it.

The next time you access your computer from the Tivo, you should see the hard drive in the list. In your case it should appear as Tivo (J: ).

I have done this with 4 different drives.

That sounds like putting the external drive in the MTR folder.

What if you want to put the folder on the external drive?

Currently I'm using one 2TB internal drive formatted as one big NT partition in each computer (each TiVo gets its own), and since XP gives it a drive letter I can change the MTR location to there from the default "buried somewhere on the C drive", but I'm wondering if XP will give a USB-connected external its own drive letter and if that will be enough to get TiVo Desktop to let me put the MTR folder there.

I would think that XP will give an external drive its own letter. Windows 7 does.

But will Tivo Desktop consider it "kosher"?

That, I don't know. I've never tried to move the MTR folder to a different location.

For what it's worth, I just went into TD and looked at the change MTR location. My external drives were listed so I assume I'd be able to move the MTR folder to an external drive if I chose to do so.
