Local Best Buy is Clueless

2192 Views 28 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  HDTiVo
My local BB has a Tivo HD connected to an HD LCD using composite video cables. Unbelievable. The signs around it say "HD Tivo", but the picture on the screen is crappy (due to the composite hookup).

It's no wonder why people don't buy into HDTV. The take a look at the screen and say "that picture isn't any better than my regular TV".

They know full well how it all works, and they probably have the TVs that give them their biggest margin looking the best.
Maybe they can hook it up using their $100 HDMI cables.
I thinks the display setup was trying to sell the HD Tivo. They'd be better off without any display!
Don't get me started on the clueless blueshirt I encountered last weekend.

I was thinking of getting a second shelf-sized antenna to dedicate to my new TiVo HD so that I could continue having my existing one connected directly to my television's tuner. The one I have now is worth maybe $25 and was included when I bought my HDTV (from another vendor!)

This idiot insisted that I needed an amplified antenna to "properly pull in those HD signals" despite my statement that I get them just fine being 10 miles away from the transmitters with my unamplified antenna. Oh no, I've heard of people in (the little town immediately in the shadow of these towers) needing an amplified antenna. Blah, blah, blah. Yeah, RIGHT.

Who knows. Perhaps there was some reason some did (television in a room below grade?) but to insist I needed one when I clearly indicated that I ALREADY RECEIVED THEM with an existing unamplified antenna...grr.

I didn't buy an antenna. I ended up splitting the one I have and guess what? My THD still has enough signal to pull my locals just fine.

I won't get into his blatantly inaccurate statements about UHF, VHF, broadcast tower location and the occupancy of said frequency bands before and after the 2009 transition in our local market.

I never mentioned my intent to buy a THD. In hindsight, I bet he would have had some great "facts" about that product, too.

just like any place, you have to know who to talk to. There are always people, regardless of where it is who don't put in the time and effort needed to become better at their job. Every place I have worked has had the good and the bad, and every place I shop has the good and the bad. I have gotten the best help at Best Buy from one Magnolia guy, who always has the right solutions (except his preference of DTV).

Many situations require an amplified antenna, and though you may not have needed it, which would have been a better solution: Going home, getting bad reception and being mad at him because he didn't get you the right antenna, or going home, plugging in the more expensive amplified antenna, and getting a great signal? He definitely did a poor job of listening, but I run into so many people who do not listen every day, so he is not in the minority...

But as always, shopping with previous knowledge gives you the ability to pick between the clueless ones and those who know what they are doing.

BB is clueless, eh? This just in, water is wet. Details at 11. :D
psh the blue shirts are nothing. My folks paid Myer Emco (A high end AV shop) to wall mount a bunch of tvs and they ran an S-Video Cable to a brand new 42 inch sony lcd. At least you arent paying best buy as much to be so stupid. My Emco is considered very high end by most.

You're right. I don't expect a sales guy to have an EE degree. But the stories of disinformation about technical stuff we hear about various big box stores! I feel badly for people with no prior knowledge, for I'm sure the sales hounds show them no mercy.

I just really bristled at him being such a tool about me needing an amplified antenna (at $70 instead of $25) before he even learned of my proximity to the towers AND after I told him I was currently receiving them quite nicely with an unamplified one. It was a bit like arguing with some clueless level-1 tech at (insert any cable/satellite/telco/cell company here) who just deer-stares and restates the scripted (dis)information when the customer demurs.

They didn't even stock my little modern-looking Terk; just its amplified brother. The unamplified ones they did have looked like something you threw away in 1984 when you got cable.

At least he wasn't around when I picked up the TiVo. He probably would have foisted (or tried to, anyway) an overpriced HDMI cable on me. Thanks, but my very reasonable monoprice one will work just fine. ;)

You'd think they were paid commission by the way they act at BB... And yes, as stated above, the consumer has to make the final choice, an being as informed as you can only helps you get the most bang for your buck.

When one of them starts in, I usually say, "excuse me, but my "BS" metter is registering off the chart now, thank you for your assistance...
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT from a MINIMUM WAGE EMPLOYEE THAT DOESN"T EVEN GET COMMISSION!

I used to be in the Electronics field many years ago selling Home Electronics. When they took away my commision. I couldn't give a rats ass how things were hooked up. Eventually I quit. In the mean time now you have minimum wage employees who don't really care.

So if you expect anything from a minimum wage employee with no commision... DON"T!

if I had to work in Best Buy I would probably play games with the customers just to pass the time. :D

I might be tempted to do the same. I could share a laugh with the customers that found me out, and the rest.... Well....

More on point, I thought I remembered reading around here recently something about the display standards that Tivo had for the display of its products and how different classes of stores had different display setups that they were supposed to have.

I'll have to dig around and see if I can find it. I'm sure Tivo wouldn't want their DVR showcased so poorly.
I don't get it. I thought component video could handle 1080i.
The original post is about "composite" cables being used. The TV picture would have probably looked a lot better with "component" cables.

Clearly you haven't been in one lately have you? They are no better than the clueless wonders elsewhere. It's kind of sad. They used to be pretty good. I bought some speakers there about 10 years ago and they really knew a lot but the last time I was in earlier this year, they were awful.
I have a script prepared for when I go to BB.

"Yes I'm Finding everything OK, No I don't Need any help with anything."

That pretty much covers every interaction I have with a blue shirt. As a former blue shirt, I do have to agree with the consensus that most of the help at BB is worthless, but most of the employees there are just kids and the only real training there involves selling items and attaching warranties and accessories. I would take everything they say with a grain of salt. Above all, do not buy cables there! When I was working there I bought a 6' gold belkin parallel cable there on my employee discount for $6. Retail price $60. 200-900% markup is par for the course. buy your cables online.
I only go into Best Buy when I already know exactly what I want (same with Fry's for that matter) I gave up long ago trying to get any information from the sales people. The Internet has been my favorite research tool ever since. I do all my research before I ever walk into a place like that. :p

What TiVo and OTHER manufacturer's want retail outlets to display/demonstrate their products & how retail outlets actually DO display/demonstrate are two different things.

Retail outlets only display/Demonstrate a companies product correctly when the company PROVIDES the proper equipment.

Example... Look at the Blu-Ray display for a Sony Blu-ray player. I was in Best Buy the other day, & a Sony REP was setting up the display & equipment for Best Buy.

Don't think TiVo would ever do that.
