Has anyone been able to get Tivo to be more flexable with their qualifying dates for the current lifetime transfer deal?

I purchased my Series2 with lifetime mid December 2003. The Tivo eligibility rules say the DVR had to be activated prior to October 1, 2003.

The whole purpose of this offer is to get lifetime subs that no longer recognize revenue off the books, hence the 10/1/2003 requirement (Tivo recognizes revenue for lifetime subs over a 4 year period)

Just spoke to Tivo on the phone and they are not willing to make exceptions to the lifetime deal requirements. Tivo just lost my money now and I will do what it takes to keep my Series 2 working. I will make out on its lifetime subscription, at least until Tivo goes under.

Take that Tivo!

Hey I would really like to upgrade to newer Tivo product but it seems they don't want my money. All they have to do is honor a few stinking months and would be willing to plop down another $500 for a new HD box with the lifetime transfer fee. Two months is like what....$25 in service fees. I would even have to purchase another Network adapter, so I would be spending $550 total. And Tivo can't budge over a $25 loss?

If they bend the rules for you, where do they draw the line?

The guy who registered in 1/2004 is gonna say "They let the 12/2003 guy! Its just a few weeks more"

Or is the line, that they should bend the rules for you and no farther. :)

The good news is that at least for now, they seem to do what they can to get these things off their books at the appropriate time. If you don't qualify now, you'll qualify later when your unit passes the 4 year mark.

After all, what's good accounting practice now will remain good accounting practice later, right?

Bending the rules is something Tivo needs to consider if the cost comes at losing a loyal customers revenue. But again, in my situation it was about losing $25 and gaining $550. For a business, the math is everything. Tivo's decision to deny me was just bad math.

Actually, I don't understand why they even have the line. If its true that the lifetime is 4 years, why wouldn't they want to do everything in their power to "reset" people on that expiring lifetime? I understand the strong desire to generate revenue off of those no longer on the books, but why would they not want to pursue all avenues of revenue.

oh well, I'm sure their MBA bean counters have "explained" everything to them..

Do they make money off of the hardware sales?

If break even == hardware sale PLUS some number of months of service, then it wouldn't behoove Tivo to allow the transfers sooner than that.

Even if Tivo HD price + $199 just barely broke even, it would give Tivo new money that they wouldn't have, and potentially reduce need for dial in (assuming people were using Ethernet(*)) and potentially reduce S1 support long term.

So even though I think they should have never gotten rid of lifetime at all, I can see that it might make economic sense for them not to have it for everyone..
(and they managed to get me to spend around $850 on the S3 lifetime offer... and I don't even have a HDTV... and I'm STILL thinking of the TivoHD offer for my other s1 lifetime... fool me twice??)

(*) My S3 is on a phone line.. and I even bought a TurboNet off of eBay to get one of my S1s off of the phone.. and now it may not be necessary long term if I take advantage of this offer. (I still need a 'game adapter' to connect to the wireless downstairs.)
