TiVo's write to hard drive first, then playback from the written material.

HR20 plays back the live stream, and wirtes to the buffer 2nd (or more accurate, splits the signal internally and does both at the same time)...

Or to keep in sync with non-dvr products playback...

As if you are watching the same channel in another room, on a non-DVR... you can hear almost an echo effect.... that was a big problem for me, when I had the TiVo product...

It was weird.. (both directions... could hear something early out of the other room, or get the echo effect).

Now, it is nearly in perfect sync.
