I managed to start a drive test after replacing the drive in a TCD746320.
The test is taking REALLY long - it's been running for over a day now.
Is this normal? It's a 500GB Hitachi drive.

You should not use 7200+ RPM drive. They produce more heat, use more power than the small power supply can provide.

The Kickstart tests does not do adequate testing and suggest you connect to a PC and do the manufacturer's tests.

The kickstart 54 command, which is the drive test, is not a very functional test since the Series 3. It will go on for days and never give you an useful information.
