Kickstart 54 - Extended Test Cancelled?

3538 Views 16 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  CrashHD
I just ran the Kickstart 54 test, and it appears my Premiere XL passed all the tests up to the Extended Test, which was inexplicably cancelled after 1 hour into what was supposed to be 4 hours. Any idea what this means? Do I have to run it again? I have attached a snapshot....

Thanks in advance,

Okay, so I ran it again and it ended almost at the same point. Still, the words "Test Passed" appeared at the top both times, so does that mean it actually passed the test?
Did you choose to run the "overnight test" when you ran KS54?

No, I ran the Smart Test, the first option on the menu. But within the Smart Test's set of sub-tests, there was an "Extended Test" , and that is what seems to be self-cancelling after an hour.

Maybe there is a limit to how often that sub-test will actually run, and I need to run the Overnight Test from the Main Menu instead?
Mystery solved!

For some reason, when you have two Tivos, if one Tivo is running the kickstart 54 tests, ANY SIGNAL from the other Tivo's remote will cancel the test. This is true even if there are NO signals from Remote #2 that work on Tivo #1 in normal operation (I have Tivo #1 set to 1, and Tivo #2 set to 2 on the DVR switch).

In other words, it's not just the CLEAR command, it's any signal from any remote will cancel the test.

What was happening was I was starting the test on Tivo #1 in the Family room,
going to my bedroom to watch Tivo #2, and the first time I used my remote on #2 it would transfer over to Tivo #1 (via RF repeater) and cancel the test.

This shouldn't have happened, but it does....

Who knew?

Kickstart 54 is performed at a level below the operating system, so it does not know how to respect Remote Address codes.

Even so, TiVoJerry, wasn't it only supposed to be the CLEAR button that cancelled the test, not just any key? Because that's the way it seems to act.

Maybe you didn't see this from Rich's Kickstart post....
WARNING: While the DVR is testing the hard drives, it will respond to any TiVo remote, regardless of its address setting. If you wish to use another DVR in the same room as the DVR running the tests, cover the front of the DVR running the tests with aluminum foil, a thick magazine, or some other material to block stray remote commands.

Are there any makers of remote controls other than TiVo brand remotes who've consulted or worked with you on enabling the multiple remote address feature on their product to make them safe to use in a room containing 2 or more TiVos?

(My mom doesn't like the shape and feel of the Peanut. Tastes vary, don't take it personally)

I'm pretty sure Harmony remotes support multiple remote addresses.

And I'm pretty sure that even if she didn't have a coronary at the price of them, she'd hate the shape and feel even more than the Peanut.
Is a kickstart 54 supposed to work on an old Series2 DirecTV tivo? Mine don't take me to the hdd screen I've seen screenshots of, they just continue to boot.
KS54 won't work on S2 units. I had asked for this process when we started adding additional drives to the HD units. I wanted a method for CS to help determine to some degree of confidence which drive might be failing. It relies on the existing drive diags, so it's not a scan we created but rather one we provide access to.

Do you mean S2 DTivos or S2 SA TiVos?

Do you mean that it won't work on the original stock drive that comes in the Series 2 TiVo, but if it's replaced with some other model drive, YMMV?

'Cause I ran it on a TCD649080 with 2 WD1001FALS.

Of course after I did I had to use the bootswap function of WinMFS to get it to work again (have no idea why, just sort of stumbled into it trying to figure out how I broke things in the first place).
Thank you for the info.
