Just received my new Premiere....a few questions

Well, I just became a 2 Tivo family by adding a new premiere to my series2, and I had a few quick questions.

I currently have a Wireless G router, and a Tivo G adaptor for my S2. I'm thinking about getting the N adaptor for the Premiere (I read that even with G router, N adaptor will work better than G). Will this work ok, or should I look into a N router as well? Also, do I need to upgrade the G for my S2 as well?

I'm looking at upgrading the storage space for my premiere, and am debating a few options. As far as External HD's go, I have WD 2 TB external drive I just got from Amazon... will this work (or can it be formatted to work), or is the My book Expander the only way to go?

If that won't work I would probaly just replace the Interior Drive with one from DvrDude off of ebay(I've done this before with S2). Any problems with this?

Is the only way to stream video from my PC to Premiere through the TivoDesktop Plus( 24.95)?

The N adapter will not work on the S2 because it plugs into the ethernet port and not the USB port and its a wireless bridge. It will only work on the Premiere and S3/HD/XL.

The My Book expander will not work on Tivo's. The only official ones is the My DVR expander.

There's also PyTivo, kmttg, and some others, but these transfer and not stream.

Personally, I'd just get the dvr-dude hard drive and get it taken care of that way if you're not inclined to make the copy yourself. The price premium just isn't all that much. I have a DVR Expander on my upstairs Premier - but if I hadn't already invested the money in that, it'd be pointless to have it because of failure issues.

Streaming is possible - use:

Streambaby http://code.google.com/p/streambaby/

or if you're on a Mac, you might as well use PyTivoX, which includes both PyTivo and Streambaby - the PyTivo part does transfer, but the Streambaby part definitely streams - and for what it's worth, I've found the Streambaby implementation to work better than the Pytivo implementation as far as what files work, and you can use .srt subtitles and... anyway, here's a link for info:

BUT NOTE that to actually INSTALL pytivox, you should use the BETA, which is the one that's working on the Premiere:

Thanks so much for the help. I was really on the fence about upgrading to Premiere, but I'm starting to think I made the right choice.

On another positive note... It didn't hurt that when I went to Charter to exchange a box for the M-card, the lady went through my account was able to knock $40 off a month without cutting any of my current services.... which I think is the first time a charter employee has actually been helpful.

A few more questions that came to mind....

Any reason not to go with the 2TB internal drive upgrade vs. a 1 TB ?

When replacing an internal HD, will this screw up my Cable card? Will it have to be re-paired with the new HD?

I put 2TB drives in my Premieres, I think for the extra cost it gives you more flexibility to keep programs longer.

I also have Charter and in my area, Knoxville TN, I didn't have to get my CableCard re-paired when I upgraded from a Tivo HD. I just plugged it in and everything worked fine. Of course I was probably the exception and not the rule with Charter, but you could always try it and the worst case would have to give them a call.

If you are using jmfs to upgrade your Premiere internal drive, you shouldn't lose your cable card pairing. Don't even consider an external drive before upgrading the internal

Go with the 2TB, and save your current internal drive in a safe place.

Is there a big advantage in "hard-wiring" my system w/an ethernet cable and upgrading to the "N" series? FYI I just use the Tivo for regular TV watching and recording..I don't download movies from Netflix, etc.

Should I stay w/current Wireless setup? Thanks.

If you only have one Tivo, and you don't download movies or anything from Netflix, and everything is working fine (do you use the HDUI if you have a Premiere? sometimes it's sensitive to network issues) - then there's no reason to upgrade or hardwire. Sure, hardwiring is always best, but if you really don't use the 'net connection for much beyond the Tivo connecting to download guide data, there's no real reason to move past wireless-g. Again, that's assuming everything is working fine the way you want it and you only have one Tivo.
