Just got a Premiere...

...and I have never been happier! This device is fantastic, and so full of features, that I have had it for two weeks and I am STILL discovering features on it! The Netflix and Hulu Plus integrations on it are great. Both services are fantastic and it's nice to be able to call my TiVo Premiere my TRUE central media hub.

First-time TiVo owner here, and this is my first post on this forum.
I came across it while researching some information on the TiVo before I bought it.

I didn't know where to post this; I figured "TiVo Premiere DVRs" would be the perfect section since that's what it is.

I just wanted to introduce myself and say that I look forward to becoming a regular member here as well as express my extreme satisfaction with the TiVo so far. I could never go back to using a cable company-provided DVR again!

Also, I love the iPad app, but I'd love to see an iPhone app, as opposed to using the mobile site on Safari. In due time, though. At least the mobile site even exists, so I can still schedule recordings away from home.

Welcome to the forum - Glade you are having a positive experience.

After you past 90 days or so you may want to consider a hard drive upgrade. The Premiere is easily upgraded to 2TB for about $80.

I actually meant to include that in my original post- I actually planned to upgrade the hard drive before I even bought it. Glad to know it's possible though. I'd much rather go with a 2TB internal disk than a 1TB external drive that costs $120.

Oh, I do have one question.

I know that an M-Card supports up to 6 simultaneous streams. There are some PCI cards for PCs that can use an M-Card for up to 4 streams, and the company that makes them (Ceton) is in the process of releasing a 6-stream PCI card.

My question is- how many simultaneous streams can the TiVo handle? (Can I only record two programs at one time, and have to watch one while it's recording? Can I record two and be watching a third? What's the capacity?)

I saw one post titled "The Premiere can now delete content from other Premieres and handle six streams!!" in the "TiVo Premiere DVRs" forum (page 2; it won't let me post links yet since my post count isn't at 5). The OP never went into detail about the "...handle six streams!!" part of the thread, just mainly about deleting content from other TiVos.

The Premiere is limited to recording 2 channels at once not because of the cable card but because TiVo only built 2 tuners into the Premiere.

It can however deal with more than 2 streams at once as an example: You could be recording 2 shows, watching an previously recorded show, downloading a moving from Amazon all at once.

aaronwt also said that if you have multiple Premieres they could also be transferring programs between each other (one upload & one download) at the same time it was doing what I mention above. Which is how aaronwt found the Premiere could handle 6 streams at once.

Welcome. We just recently ditched directv and came back to tivo and cable. I've been happy with the premiere for the most part and glad we made the decision to come back. Enjoy and welcome to the forum.

I had Time Warner Cable ages ago, and I finally got fed up with their service- mainly their Internet connection. I switched to Verizon with DirecTV (since they had a package deal with DSL and DirecTV as their television provider), and I liked it a lot.

Well, Verizon rolled out FiOS during its experimental phase in my area. It caught on, so they kept it. I got it the week it was available in my area. I've never been happier with television and Internet service. I kinda got lucky that they used CableCARDs though, because services like AT&T U-Verse do not use CableCARDs. They are strictly IPTV. FiOS is hybrid (uses SDV for the TV portion, uses an Internet connection for on demand content, guide, information, 'widgets', and pretty much everything else that is not the picture being produced on the TV.

I had the Verizon FiOS Home Media DVR (really nice because you can have just one DVR but watch recorded content on any STB throughout the house). $30/mo just wasn't cutting it though. The thing only has a 160GB HDD in it, and unlike the TiVo, you can't upgrade it or add any external drive to it. I think I have finally found something I can settle on though.

Eventually, I will get the lifetime subscription on this TiVo. Unfortunately, they don't let you finance the lifetime subscription. You need $500 up front. So the subscription with one-year commitment seemed perfect for not.

Welcome to the wonderful world of TiVo!

I wish FiOS was available in my area, but sadly they haven't built the infrastructure to my end of the DFW metroplex yet.

Welcome, glad you like the Premier. I wish the UI was a bit more seamless. I like the window at the top that allows you to continue to watch while in the menu system, but then you to to check the recording history and you are back to the UI from the old days.

Yeah, I agree- the UI is great, but I hate that when I go in to anything else that isn't "My TiVo", I lose the TV stream.

Also, I am really happy that TiVo is coming out with the TiVo Preview. That is pretty cool. It'll be nice to be able to access the TiVo without actually having to get an entirely separate TiVo DVR in the other rooms. I am interested to see what the TiVo Premiere Q will retail for. I'd love to end up getting that one.

It'd be nice to see like an RVU-like setup with the TiVo Premiere Q and TiVo Preview, where you can just have one TiVo Premiere Q in the house and put a TiVo Preview on every TV you want to be able to watch TV on. Then I could just eliminate my FiOS STBs. But I doubt the TiVo Preview will actually be capable of streaming live TV from the TiVo. It'll probably just access the recordings and probably Netflix/Hulu Plus.
