The only good thing about this show is Shaun is gone.

An apparently "everything is revealed" in the season finale. Anyone actually buy that?

If they do reveal anything in the finale, I'm sure they'll add a lot of new questions to replace the existing ones.

I'm liking the show a lot, but it sure doesn't seem to be in any hurry to answer things.

I was gonna ask exactly the same thing.

How many people believe "all is revealed" when they see that in reference to a season finale? :)
The chemist = Howard Hesseman = John(ny) (Fever) From (WKRP in) Cincinnati.

LOL
the closed down bar reminds me of the red room in twin peaks.

Never have I watched a show this long and understood this little.

My wife was trying to explain this show to her sister, and she said, "it's kind of like Twin Peaks."

I disagreed, because at some level, Twin Peaks made sense. Yes, there were supernatural powers at work, but it was a simple story about a murdered girl, and it turns out that...
her father did it while posessed by bOb
But come on, what is this show about? Does anybody know?

And yes, I put a spoiler tag on a 17-year-old TV show.
The entire episode last night was filler. Not one thing was revealed. Talk about stretching it out. This whole story could have been told in a 4 hours mini-series.

Loved seeing Johnny Fever! That pimped out Lincoln was awesome, as well.

The only thing that I know of that approaches this level of "WTF?" was Carnivale Season 1. At least that was a little more cohesive, and you could see some progression between episodes. JFC, while compelling for the various Deadwood parallels, is also quite a jumbled mess.
Jumbled mess? I had no problem understanding any of the scenes this time around, except perhaps not being sure what was going on with barry - seemed like it reminded him of his molestation as a kid.

The only "confusing" thing in this episode is what exactly happened to shaun and what john is all about. Those are mysteries we are supposed to be pondering.

Agreed. The episodes, as stand alone entities, are frequently understandable and enjoyable. That's not my point. What I'm getting at, is when you take them all together, as a single narrative, that is when things start to not to make a whole lot of sense. We've been presented with a numerous events that don't have a lot of cohesion between them.

Perfect response! I was hoping you'd say that.

For instance, Mitch's levitation, which started early in the very first episode, seems to have absolutely no relation to anything at all in the show - we don't know a damn thing about why he levitated, why other characters haven't levitated, whether he'll continue to levitate, whether it's tied in with the other mysterious goings-on, whether John is orchestrating it, etc. etc.

Another example: Shaun's appearances in Barry's bar. Are they merely figments of Barry's imagination? If so, why is he imagining Shaun there? Can anyone else see Shaun there? Are the appearances related to some overarching thing that's going on related to John? etc. etc.

Or how about John's appearances to Cissy? What's the point of those?

There are many of these events that from a one-episode viewpoint are kind of interesting, but from the long-term viewpoint appear to be merely random and pointless. I won't stay interested in random and pointless forever.

Or where the hell Mitch was for the multiple episodes between the last time we saw him, and when he decided to turn up at the Chemist's last night...

There's a virtual laundry list of stuff that "got thrown out there" that looked pretty cool, but even a half-hearted explanation or tie-in never occurred.

Listen, I don't need things spoon-fed to me. But to continually throw things out there, with very little rhyme or reason is starting to turn me off. I'll watch the end of this season, but should there be a season 2, I doubt I'll stick around. The only way that happens is if Milch pulls the proverbial bunny from his hat and manages to tie a decent percentage of this stuff together in a somewhat reasonable manner in the last episode.

He was in Baja, Mexico. That's where the chemist (Dr. Johnny Fever) lived. Presumably, Mitch was seeking enlightenment. And dodging reality.

Well, of course he was (on all counts). It just seemed kinda wierd that throughtout the show, we've always observed just about all of the characters doing something at all times, no matter how inconsequential those actions were. Take the Chemist sweeping, for example. Or Cass endlessly watching video in her hotel room for days on end, over and over and over. Or the two Hawaiians doing whatever in their hotel rooms.

It just seemed irregular and inconsistent in the show's presentation that Mitch just dropped off the face of the earth, and then simply re-appeared a few days later. Even a two-second clip of him walking the beach alone pondering the complexities of the universe would have sufficed.
I did enjoy the "Deadwoodesque" build-up of tension, there was going to be a gun fight, a wild horse, or a mob beating on that beach somewhere.....

How can you say Mitch's levitation has no relation to what's going on? John showed up and he levitated. Coincidence? Other male Yosts have exhibited some sort of supernatural occurrence (Shaun brought back to life by Zippy, and Butchie's inability to get high or dope sick). Seems to me that John's presence has a significant effect on three of the main male characters. No relation? You must be smoking some of that stuff Vietnam Joe has been growing.

Barry started seeing the things in the bar after the BBQ where things were big and huge. I'm guessing this is no coincidence either. And no, nobody else can see him. And the point of Cissy's visions, I'm guessing that John was trying to keep Cissy from killing herself and having Shaun come home to find his dead grandmother lying on the floor as he said in her vision.

I've got no idea what Milch has in mind, or in store for us, but I don't really see random or pointless in any of it. The shots of people doing "nothing" create mood and pace. I think it is a refreshing change from the headache inducing MTV-inspired drivel that is 24 and its ilk. But that's just me.

I'm not really worried about what the "endgame" is. I'm much more interested in what is happening. Sometimes we never know why things happen, they just do. I'm ok with that as long as the journey to the question is interesting, which it totally is.
