This show just keeps drawing me in more and more. Almost indescribable as there are so many things going in, but definitely an interesting show to watch and digest.

Cissy sure is one bundle of nerves.

The show's staying true to form though... nothing's much clearer after this episode was over than it was before it began. It's just fun to watch. :)
"It's in the camera."

I think we did get proof in this episode that Bill is talking to his bird, and not a mystery dead/alive/ailing wife upstairs.

And I have the theme song stuck in my head ... "Johnny Appleseed ... Hey hey ya"

I actually was thinking there was enough conversation to believe we got proof it was a two-way conversation with the bird. Though maybe Bill was just repeating out loud what he heard, not answering, so the bird might've been talking to someone else. :)

But was the bird talking ... or just conveying? :)

I watched a John From Cincinatti marathon this week (hadn't seen any before) and this was the weakest episode yet. That might have been camoflauged because it was difficult to understand what was really happening in the earlier ones (not that it is anymore obvious now, but you get a better feel for the characters anyway).

But this one was pretty weak IMO.

Yep, I thought this ep was weakest so far, but still not bad. Rebbecca way overplayed Cissy's reaction to pron-mom, especially the screaming outside Kai's trailer.

Way too little John this week. No doctor and no motel crew.

I don't know that she overplayed it. Seemed like Cissy is really close to a total nervous breakdown because of all that has happened, especially to Shaun.

I need to watch the episode again, there was a lot of dialogue that I just didn't understand. Such as something possibly about butchie's real name being shaun?? And I didn't get the oozing leg conversation with the vet, other than that he had to watch a lot of his army mates die because he was unable to save them.

You must have been distracted:

* Pron mom wanted Shaun named Shaun. Butchie fought tooth and nail to get the name Shaun to stick.

* He was in the Army infantry. He paused to check his foot because it was injured. Due to his pausing to check his foot, he wasn't killed when the rest of his buddies were.

That was my take, I could be wrong.

I had to pause and turn on closed captioning for the scene between Linc and Tina where they were talking about Shaun. I still don't really understand what Linc was trying to convey with the whole ~"(Butchie) started going aerial, and when he saw they were taking points away, it kind of became his thing."

Is this what they mean when they say Butchie changed the sport? Are they saying he was the first to start going aerial in competition? What does that have to do with making his parents allow the name Shaun to stick?

I thoroughly enjoy this show, and don't mind when things in general are confusing, but this conversation really threw me off.

I think "aerial" in this case may mean the antannea Butchie had mounted onto his head. I don't think we've had a direct mention of "antennae", just the "implants" that John overheated a couple eps back.

I think it was actual Aerials, which are apparently a more recent phenomenon in surfing. He would do them when it was not considered proper surfing technique, apparently. Which would also maybe explain why he is still revered, if he popularized aerials.

That's what I was thinking, but I don't know what Mitch and Cissy's reluctance to call Shaun "Shaun" has to do with the aerials. I'm just confused by Linc's segue way from one thing to the other. It's what prompted me to turn on CC because I thought maybe I missed a word or two in there.

I don't think there was necessarily a direct link between the two.

Pornmom said she wanted to call Shaun "Shaun" because she thought it sounded like the sound of surf rushing back out to sea. Cissy and Mitch didn't want to call him that, probably just because Pornmom did. Butchie "went to bat" for Pornmom with Cissy and Mitch on the "Shaun" name issue (kind of like he went to bat for her this episode to get Cissy to let her see Shaun), so I guess Butchie's stubborn intervention ended up getting them to call him that.

I don't remember the exact segue, but I don't think the whole Butchie-aerials thing really had anything to do with that. Maybe Linc brought it up just because Butchie sticking with the aerials even though he was getting points deducted showed he has a stubborn streak - the same stubborn streak he exhibited when he insisted that Cissy and Mitch use the name that Pornmom came up with for Shaun?

From the HBO summary of Episode 3:

The two of them sit on the half-pipe, and Butchie recounts the searing pain that boiled around two steel implants in his head – a remnant of "aerials" he wore on the circuit to mock old-school surfers. Dr. Smith explains that the sensation could stem from IV drug use – pointing out Butchie's tracked arms – but he says it could also be paranormal, especially considering what happened with Shaun.

Dead on.

From the HBO Summary:

Railing on about his guilt – his platoon had been wiped out while he lingered behind to remove blisters from his feet – Joe slowly realizes he never shared this story with the bartender.
