Is this truly necessary? I felt the series wrapped itself up fairly nicely.

Exactly my thoughts. The series ended perfectly, no need to drag it out.
So, a movie gets turned into a TV show and back into a movie? Which cast will be in the new movie?
All I have ever seen of this story is the original movie and several high school football games in Odessa back in the '80s. I was surprised to see the TV show catch on and become popular but I was never interested in watching it. I am even more surprised a new movie is planned. I had never seen anything like high school football in Odessa and Midland back in the '80s, it was something it seems almost everybody that lived in the area paid attention to.

Actually, it's a book that was turned into a movie that was turned into a tv show that was turned into a movie. :)

Maybe they can then write a book on the new movie to bring the series back around.

And really the tv show > movie > book.

I agree. I would however, be in favor of a prequel showing the early days of Coach and Mrs T's relationships and careers.

Personally, I don't get this. I don't understand why people can't be happy with what we have. There are relatively few prequels that work and doing so would probably require you to ditch Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton.

Many TV shows tell a story for a certain period. Friends ended because everyone was getting married and having kids and the story was about a bunch of twenty-something singles. It's the same here. The show starts with the Taylors arriving in Dillon and ends with them leaving. Why do we need to see more than that.

And for the record, I feel the same way about Arrested Development. The story told itself over 3 years, although they clearly could have done more. With DVD's and Netflix and Hulu where we can watch these shows repeatedly, why do we need to expand on a story needlessly?

I agree. Same goes for the Flintstones. Why does Seth MacFarlane feel that he needs to put HIS imprint on that classic and innocent cartoon series?

I am sure there will be a book about the movie. :)

I don't get it either. We are happy with what we have, it's the movie moguls that are trying to suck the FNL teat dry and not let it just end well.

I can only hope we are wrong and they do a great job with it!
Well, they did such a great job with the show that maybe they won't mess up the movie. I hope they are working with the same writers and can keep the feel of it. New characters are not a big deal, we have had them before. Might be fun to have Jason come down from NYC to visit Coach.

The show is much more about a family who works at a high school where the father is football coach and the mother is faculty. I think the show caught on mostly because of the impressively realistic portrayal of this family and the students involved. The family just feels real.

I hope the people who thought this was just a story about football would go back and watch it because it's some of the best TV I've seen.

I'm torn with this news because while I loved this show a lot, I feel like we got an awesome ending and I was satisfied. There's no real need for it to continue but I will probably want to see it if it does get made simply because if the writers and actors remain the same, it could be really good.

If you never watched the show, you have missed out on arguably one of the best TV shows of all time. It's not about football, it's about life in a small Texas town where everything revolves around football.

As for the movie, I'm of mixed feelings. I thought the show ended perfectly, but I would never say no to seeing more of Coach and Mrs. Coach.

To be precise, it's a non-fiction "year in the life" book that was turned into a "based on a true story" movie that was turned into a fictional TV show that is being turned into a fictional movie. :)
Sounds like "Street Fighter: The Movie Video Game" which was a video game based on a movie that was based on a video game.
It's interesting. The book was once thought to be impossible to adapt for the screen, and now they've gotten a good movie, a classic TV show and apparently an unnecessary movie spin off. And you could probably include Varsity Blues as having been inspired by the original book.
Not sure how exactly they'd structure a spin off movie. Any movie version obviously has to include Coach and Mrs. Coach, since they are the heart of the show. But they've now moved on from the life they lived in the show. So would the movie have them going back to that life? Would it be about their new adventures, without any of the high school kids from Dillon? Would it be about Tim and Billy coaching the Panthers and calling Coach to come back and share his wisdom? It just seems to me like the show ended perfectly, and any attempt to continue the story will be too contrived.

Maybe they'll fast forward 13-14 years in the future and we'll get to see Coach and Mrs. Coach dealing with a teenage version of Gracie Belle, who's even more of a handful than Julie was.
Why have Dillon in it at all? Just have it be the new adventures of Coach and Mrs. Coach and their new life. Julie and Matt can still be in it, Jason Street can come down from NYC and maybe even try and talk to the new players that Coach is dealing with. Coach teaching an Eastern high school team could be fun - Texas and Pennsylvania have different methods to coaching but the goal is the same...to win.
