Need help from the pros....Last night my S2 may have died. Everything froze up so I unplugged and waited a few minutes before I plugged it back in. I get to the "almost there. Just a few minutes more" screen, but nothing has changed for the past few hours. There is also a clicking noise going on. It clicks about every second.

Is it time to bury my old faithful S2?

No I don't. Not sure what I would do with it if I did.
I think I'll take the cover off and poke around a little. If it is the HD, I'll look into replacing it.

What is "instant cake"? If it has something to do with re-imaging the HD, I have a friend who could probably do it.

If your S2 is one of your 2 Series2's that have Lifetime it would be worth it to try a new (Larger :up: ) drive. Lifetime is tied to the TiVo's mother board also if both S2's are the same model then you can get the image from the other TiVo, that is if you do not already have one. Instructions can be found in the TiVo Community > Underground Playground > TiVo Upgrade Center I suggest you use MFSLive for your boot CD if you get that far.

Instant Cake is a boot CD that automates upgrading Drives for use in TiVo's. For around $20 US you get a down loadable CD image that includes a software backup image for your model TiVo along with the scripts.

MFSLive is a free download with the backup restore tools MFSLive does not include the TiVo software image you need to get that from a backup or a (working) TiVo hard drive.

Not anymore. I transferred it over to the S3. At that time, I was given free service for 12 months on the S2. I spoke with TIVO this morning to see if that free service offer would apply to a new unit and they said it would only apply if I traded it in to them and they would send me a DT, but the cost would be $149. I could get a DT from Circuit City for $58 (after rebates) and since I only have 3 months left of free service, it would make more sense to go to CC and get the DT Tivo.

I'll check ebay to see if there is any value of a broken S2. Highly doubtful though.

Yeap, it's just a roll of the dice. I'm only losing out of about 3 months of free service, so not that big of a deal. Actually, I'm kind of excited about getting a new tivo.
