Is Knology feeding me a bunch of bull?

Just bought myself a nice 50" HDTV. I'm dying for another Tivo. This SA 8300 DVR is driving me insane.

I have Knology in St. Petersburg, FL. I called them up to ask if they could hook me up with a couple of CableCards for the TivoHD that I plan to buy in the next couple of days, if everything turns out OK.

The person on the line told me that they had not rolled out HD service through CableCards. They told me that I could get HD service through their STB, or "SD CableCards", but not "HD CableCards" Is there even such a thing? I was under the assumption that DTV broadcasts are broadcast in both and that there is no designaiton for HD or SD CableCards.

Can someone set me straight? I did call them on a Saturday, so I'm sure I didn't reach the shining stars of the cable company (ha!), and I plan to call back tomorrow.

Call them back and tell them you need a couple of cablecards for your 'cablecard enabled' HD televisions, and see if they give you the same line.

I vote for 'a bunch of bull'.
Total BS.

Get the to install whatever CableCARDs they have. If you get "SD CableCARDS" (LOL!!), then they can't charge you for some bogus HD fee.

There are only two types of CableCARDs - single stream (SCards) and multi-stream (MCards). Ideally, for the Tivo HD, you can get an MCard, otherwise you will need two SCards.
I have Knology (actually PrairieWave, but part of the same company c/o a recent merger). I had similar runaround fed to me when trying to get CableCARDs for use with my Series3 TiVo. As others have pointed out, there's no such thing as "SD" or "HD" CableCARDs - the cards don't care about the particulars of the bitstream, they just decrypt it. See if you can speak to someone in network operations, they'll probably be more knowledgeable about the issue. The sales, support and customer service staff at PrairieWave were pretty ignorant about the whole situation.
Thank you all. I'm calling back tomorrow. Now if I can only convince them that I don't need their technician to install the cards.
Good luck with that - I did have to have the tech come out, and while he was here, he told me how I should have eBayed the TiVo and got one of their DVRs; that was big yuks for me.
Hah!

I'm on the phone with them right now, they are trying to tell me that they haven't rolled out CableCards, they tole me something else yesterday.
OK, now they have told me that they don't offer them, they "aren't subject to any FCC mandates regarding CableCards" and they don't know when they will have them.

I'm thinking I'm going to put in a call to the FCC, and I'm going to talk to the head of my condo board, as well as the highest-up person I can find at Knology. My condo is wired for Brighthouse as well as Knology, but unfortunately we have a site-wide service agreement with them. I wonder when that contract expires.....

Call TiVo. I understand that TiVo will get on a 3way call with you and your cable company and get it worked out. In other words, your cable company needs to be reminded of the FCC ruling and the integration ban that went into effect July 1st.
That's total BS too. Push it up the chain of command and inform them that they're violating the law by refusing to provide you with a cablecard. I'm sure someone will post the link soon enough that states they're required by law to 1.) Provide cablecards, 2.) provide STB's w/ cablecards. The 2nd one was enacted this summer.

Seriously, get TiVo on a 3way with these jerks. TiVo absolutely knows what the cable companies are mandated to do, and they can talk the 'lingo' and make it clear that your cable company is on the wrong side of the FCC. This is not the first post I have seen regarding Brighthouse/Knology putting up obstacles regarding cablecards.
Should I even bother calling my local cable office directly?
small cable companies can be exempt from the FCC mandate - you need to find out for sure before you pursue this. Contacting the FCC is your best bet
I think that that's what they told me. I checked a list of cable companies that were exempt, however, and it appeared that the FCC had denied Knology's request for an extension.
As I said, try to speak to someone who's in their network operations department. The frontline people know approximately dick about this - I had the *exact* same "explanation" given to me ("oh, we're not subject to that", which then turned into "oh, we *have* them, but the FCC Plug-and-Play rules don't say anything about us providing them for third party equipment"). Don't buy it - when I finally spoke to the network operations people, they told me they'd had CableCARD infrastructure in place for *a year and a half*. Do not let them weasel their way out - tell them you want to speak to someone in Network Operations, that's your best bet, they actually know about these things.

EDIT: FYI, it took me almost 2 months to finally get someone from their netops department to call me. Don't make the same mistake, be insistent about it, they have it.

Draft a letter and/or email, to the FCC asking if your provider is exempt. Indicate in your letter that you are copying your provider. Send a copy to Knology. One way or the other, you will get an answer. The FCC will let you know, or Knology will either ignore you, send you something in writing saying they are exempt, or they will provide you the cablecards.
After three calls to the local Knology office (the first two times I called, I got transferred to the main "idiot line" immediately upon requesting help. the thir time, I got through to a woman named Ini, who was very helpful, although I obviously knew more about it than she (she had never heard of cablecards). I explained to her what I was trying to do, explained that I had been given the runaround about a dozen times, and she took down my information and had the manager call me back.

He actually called me back within about 30 minutes, and explained that they had just finished testing the cablecard system last week, and that basically, no one in the company knew that they had the service in Pinellas county, FL. Don't they have email?

So bottom line is that after about a dozen calls, they are coming tomorrow evening to deliver and configure the cablecards. I stopped by the local BB and picked up a THD at lunch today.

If anyone else from Pinellas has similar problems, I have a direct number for the manager that helped me. I forgot his name.

Thanks again to everyone! I am now free of that nasty 8300! (tomorrow)

Glad to hear you have a resolution. What amazing timing you have!! Just after they tested their system. Wow. Just amazing.

Now when you get home, get the HD hooked up and force it to make service calls, hopefully you will connect it to your home network and broadband. It's just faster that way. Anyway, the latest software version is "c1", or something like that, and it incorporates some fixes that are specific to Scientific Atlanta cablecards. If Knology uses Motorola cards, you don't have much to worry about, but the SA cards were pretty problematic. Just run through guided setup and tell it you will be using cable, possibly cable and antenna (if you'll have an OTA antenna hooked up), but you can tell it cable with no cablecards at this point. Then start forcing the service calls until you get "c1". When the Knology guy inserts the first cablecard, the HD will recognize it like plug and play, read off the numbers, they hit the card, and when you have both cards inserted and hit (if using S cards), or the one M card, then re-run the guided setup as prompted.

Then enjoy.

My software version is at 8.1.7c2-01-2-652. Is that the latest?
