I am not sure who D* is. But if it is a well known satellite service provider, I think the box is made by Tivo.
Sure it's a competitor, but there are some users who won't or can't go to satellite or DirecTV. There are some (such as myself) who prefer TiVo. As a matter of fact, my cable company has fewer HD channels than DirecTV but I stick with them simply so I can use my TiVo instead of DirecTV. TiVo just has to work on producing the best products they can and let the marketplace decide. With the Elite and the Previews coming soon, TiVo will have a very, very similar system to sell and the "home media server" concept will not be exclusive to DirecTV anymore. (not that it is now, anyway)I have a older Tivo HD DVR and one of the newer Tivo Premieres (love the new UI BTW), but I was wondering about the new D* DVRs that they recently released. Is the new Home Media Center DVR from D* a threat to Tivo? I am wondering if people will give D* more consideration if their new DVR is a fair competition to Tivo? Many years ago I was a D* customer (when they first starting building their own branded DVRs) and their DVRs were horrible. I have read they are much better now and I wonder what impact, if any, they will have on Tivo.
Thoughts?

Not a direct threat to Tivo. More of a threat to cablecos. D*'s DVRs have gotten better over the years, but I still don't like them as well as Tivo. D* is a Tivo partner, hence the THR22, so I doubt they are going to directly market the HMC DVRs as a Tivo competitor, but based on my experience, I would rather have D*'s HMC DVR than anything from a cable company, with the exception of the Tivo Premier/Elite. That said, D* is expensive, so I am leaving them shortly. I just need to complete my transition to OTA with Tivo.I have a older Tivo HD DVR and one of the newer Tivo Premieres (love the new UI BTW), but I was wondering about the new D* DVRs that they recently released. You've seen documentation of this since the new satellites and MPEG4? I know it had gotten atrocious before I left, but DTV users now claim that everything is wine and roses.I wouldn't switch back to DirecTV even if they had a 20 tuner series 5 TiVo. The simple fact is that their HD is fake HD and is not as good as cable. I don't want some over-compressed stretched-res garbage. And I want to watch TV when it rains.
