One of my HR10-250's started flashing onscreen "Insert Access Card" over the weekend. I called D* and had a new card sent even though I think it isn't the problem. With the new card things were fine for 10 minutes but after I started surfing the same error came back flickering on the screen. When I go to System Information I can watch it blink between the card # and "Insert Access Card". Any ideas? Is it worth doing a clear and delete? I hate to do that, especially since I have 2 730gb drives in this setup.

Jim,

How the heck are you supposed to clean the reader contacts? I did try putting a business card in with the access (on top of it) to make a tighter fit and better contact and it didn't help. When I opened the box from a birdseye view the contacts looked pretty good.

I had this start happening a couple of months ago.

It would flash that message only every now and then. After a bit, I started getting a message that it shut down because it was too hot. Even after letting it sit for a couple of hours. I ended up getting a new Power Supply from WeaKnees.com for about $70 and everything is working fine.

I had this same problem with my HR10. I tried cleaning the contacts which didn't seem to help. Shortly after the "insert access card" problem began, I also started experiencing audio dropouts and eventually I began getting a screen telling me the unit was overheating. This led me to changing out the power supply, and all of these problems went away - this was two weeks ago and the unit has been working great.........if cleaning your contacts doesn't help, I would consider replacing your power supply.

My Weaknees power supply will arrive today and I think it will solve the problem. I have two hard drives in this unit and the twinbreeze/fan bracket. I tested running the stock 250gb drive only last night and it worked fine for the most part. I would see occasional blips but under a lighter load the supply seemed better.

Power supply fixed the problem. I put a new fan in the back for insurance. Thanks Weaknees!

What I didn't mention before (rant) was the hour and a half I spent on the phone with Directv last Saturday when I discovered the problem. Could have saved a lot of time if I'd started with searches here in the forum.

When D* decided that it was likely a hardware problem I got the incredible offer of them taking my owned HR10-250 to be replaced by an HR20 on lease. I got a supervisor on the line and explained this is a sure fire way to get rid of a 12 year customer and that next time I take my owned car in with a problem and they offer to take the car and give me a leased vehicle instead of fixing it I'll know I've gone mad. I politely told him that they will never compete with Comcast, Verizon Fios and all the other players doing ridiculous things like this.

Of course the real kicker was that I could take the incredible lease for owned equipment deal and start a two year agreement. No thanks.

I called back and went through the escalation process again, had a card sent for $20 and ruled that out as a problem. I then promptly came to the forums and figured out that it would most likely be a power supply and it was.

Thanks for being her TivoCommunity.

Directv - thanks for nothing and kiss my a$$.
