I did it. I ordered a HD Tivo from Tivo.com
I don't like their new monthly fee plans, though.
I currently own one Tivo Series2 with a Lifetime Subscription and another with a monthly subscription that is only $6.95/month. I don't like that I had to lock in to a 1, 2 or 3 year plan (I picked 1) and have to pay $10.95/month instead of $6.95.

I guess they weren't making enough money the old way.

I am going to be replacing my stupid Comcast HD DVR with the Tivo HD DVR when it arrives. I suspect I will be very happy with it since I HATE the Comcast DVR software! The Comcast DVR is $11.95/month, so I'll save a buck each month. woo hoo!

There's an easy fix for your unhappiness. Buy the HD at a retail location, Circuit City or BestBuy. When you get it add the HD to your account at 6.95 and cancel the unit currently at 6.95. Problem solved.
You have to sign up for a contract no matter where you buy the box. Also, you can get MSD rates on Tivo.com for new purchases now if you login first. If you wanted you could buy the box at retail and change the TSN of the $6.95 box to get the MSD rate but this would cancel the older box.

You got the 3 years for 10.95 a month because you bought the unit without being logged to your account. If you log into your account first, and then go to the shop area, you'll get the 3 years for 6.95 a month option.

If you already bought the unit, just call Tivo. They should be able to change the plan charges and add the unit to your account.

I am a bit confused here. I have one S2 tivo that is currently at $6.95 per month. I was going to cancel it a year or so ago when I was paying $12.95 and they offered it to me at $6.95 and I kept it.

So now if I buy a S3 from Circuit City, will I be able to add it at a MSD price? Will I be able to add it at $6.95? I would buy one at the $299 price, but paying $16.95 just it not something I am willing to do at this time.

I would want to keep the S2 also, so I would have 2 tivos.

When I log into my account, I don't seem to get any discount pricing.

You will get $6.95 MSD pricing if you sign up for 3 years on your new box.

that is becasue you do not have any qualifying plans to get the MSD rate on the new Tivo HD. The Only plan you have is currently at MSD already.

The best you can do is get the 3 year prepaid plan which is effectively 8.21 a month or else agree to 3 years monthly payemnt at 12.95 a month.

No idea if it has any imapct on your first TiVo since you went off the books and got a deal not officially discussed in the plans.

Doesn't his lifetime box qualify him for MSD? I thought you could get up to 5 boxes with MSD pricing?

I thought the same thing as you at first, and then I realized there are two different posters asking for information in this thread!

It was the OP who had the lifetime

It stays the same price but on a monthly basis.
That stinks. I don't think I can make a case for dad to get the S3 then. :( He will not pay that much for a S3 and that high of a monthly fee. The only way I would be able to convince him is if the fee dropped to $6.95 after a year. Oh well.

The only way to qualify for MSD is to have at least one box on your account with lifetime or paying the *full* monthly rates ($12.95 or higher).
You can also get a 3 year pre-pay on one box for $299 ($8.31/mo) and then a 2nd box you can go monthly for $6.95. Short of lifetime that's the cheapest way to go if you want more than 1 Tivo.

He has a Series 1 lifetime so the S3 will get MSD but with the chances of the S3 being a brick in two years I cannot recommend that my Dad get the 3 year contract. It would just come back and bite me. He would be mad at Tivo and me. He is not reasonable about these things. Basically, I would have to warn him that if Comcast goes to SDV his Tivo could be a paper weight. I do not want that hanging over my head.

If your Dad is likely to stay with Tivo, but say on the next gen hardware, get the 3 year plan. Any service plan can be transferred to new hardware w/o penalty. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be well understood (or explained on the tivo web site)

OK so what you are saying is if he gets the 3 year contract on a S3 and the cable company goes to SDV 2 years into the contact he can transfer the remaining year of the contract to a S4 that Tivo has SDV built in. Hypothetically speaking of course.

Well, I wound up canceling the order from Tivo.com and went to a local BestBuy to pick one up. Tivo was telling me arrival in a couple of weeks. I wanted it NOW! So I got it last night and hooked it up. No trouble hooking it up. I'd swear the standard def looks better through this TivoHD box than it does via the stupid Comcast HD-DVR box. And I sure love the Tivo interface WAY WAY better than the stupid Comcast interface. (Which, by the way, about 10 years ago I had a hand in programming for Comcast. I didn't design it, so don't blame me for it's stupidity, I just did what I was told!)

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to getting the CableCards installed on Saturday. I sure hope the guy that comes knows what he is doing and has enough Cards on his truck to get it to work the first time.

I'll let you know.
