Just got a message on my Toshiba DVD Tivo basic unit. It says I don't have a broadband adapter and can't get Rocketboom. Well, there is no phone cord to my unit and it has been wireless from day one. I can switch to a phone line, but I am sure it costs Tivo more to connect this way. The message should say that because I don't pay to upgrade my service, I can't get Rocketboom.

Sorry Tivo, I am not going to pay to upgrade to a yearly contract and you can lie about how I connect to get my listings all you want. I have 2 other units I pay for service for and will continue to watch Rocketboom on one of those units. Tivo needs to be honest to those of us who connect via broadband with basic service though.

Have you tried to force a connection to verify that the TiVo is actually connecting to the service? Is this unit wired or wireless? What adapter is it using?

My Tivo basic service unit connects fine. It uses the same Linksys 802.11b usb adapter that I use with one of my Tivo's that I pay a monthly fee for. I am not sure why I got the message about it not being connected to broadband. I am surely not going upgrade into a yearly contract just to get Rocketboom. I am happy with the manual recordings it does and the 3 days worth of programming I get. Just don't like the misleading message I received. Tivo needs to be honest with its Tivo basic customers.

First, there is no yearly contract. Yes, you have to commit to one year, but after that you have no commitment at all.

A lie and a fault in their system are very different things. So you got a standard message that should have given better/actual reasons for your inability to get Rocketboom on that Tivo. BFD. You know you can't get it. You know why you can't get it. Why get bent out of shape over a message about it?

No kidding. It would actually be better for TiVo if this message were correct, because it might inspire some people to upgrade to the full TiVo service -- especially once the downloadable content becomes more compelling.

I imagine there is a software engineer at TiVo who said a big "Oops" when he heard about this. And remember, the download capability is still in the "trial" phase. Based on the comments in other threads, and my own experience, there are a couple of bugs to work out. Error messages seem to be one area that needs work: the TiVo sometimes tells you that it didn't record Rocketboom because there wasn't enough space, even though there was enough space. See the Rocketboom thread for more.

If you only have Basic, then you aren't going to get online content AFAIK. All the adapter gets you is the guide updates and software updates. I'm guessing the message may not have been worded correctly, but the fact that you don't suscribe to the service means you don't get any enhanced content.

I don't doubt what you are saying, but a confirmation from TiVo regarding this would be nice.

Coasterfan , have you tried contacting TiVo to verify if this is the case?

well you are not going to get the free download content like rocketboom.
and for someone to view an error of sending the wrong type message as some lying way to sell broadband adapters is just really screwy
