do the Showcase recordings on my HR20-700 take up my recording space?

You should normally ask HR20 questions at www.dbstalk.com.

To answer your question, they do not. The HR20, like the HR10 before it has an amount of hard disk space reserved for this feature and it's not reported or advertised as actual capacity. Hope that helps.

Yes, they do take up space. DirecTV has reserved 60 or 80 Gigs of hard drive space that you can't use.
He asked about his recording space RS4. Of course everything takes up space.

Reserved space is part of the DVR landscape. TiVo pioneered that to push advertising to their customers.

You can test this on your HR20 in a way you can't on any TiVo. Simply go into your showcases and delete some items. Notice that your free space indicator does not change. TiVo offers neither the ability to delete them nor a free space indicator. The latter of which has been begged for by their customers since 1999.

I'm not quite sure why you're jumping on me, Billy. I merely pointed out the recordings go in to the 60-80 gigs that DirecTV reserves on the hard drive.

I think there ought to be an option of how much space (down to a minimum) is to be reserved on the hard drive. I believe I read that DirecTV reserved so much space for VOD. Well, what if the customer isn't interested in VOD or Showcases?

Agreed.

The showcases take up some of the total 300GB disk space but not of the 200 GB set aside for your recordings.

Whether there are showcases recorded or not, you still can record 50 hours of MPEG4 HD or 200 hours of SD.

But wouldn't it be nice for the customer to decide if they want showcases and the other stuff? That way, a lot of that 60 or 80 gig would be available for more shows the customer is interested in. Oh, I guess that requires someone to think about this prior to building the box?

where is that option on a unmodified HR10?
